About

Isded is an optical illusion found when the Pepsi cola logo is read upside down. Images of upside down Pepsi logos are posted online as a reaction image to videos of someone sustaining injury or someone is mocked severely. In later years, people attach the name of a celebrity or phrase upside down next to the "Isded" logo and a caption asking the reader to "turn your screen."

Origin

The Pepsi logo used for the "Isded" illusion debuted in 1960, placing a sans serif font version of the Pepsi logo before a blue and red bottle cap (now known as the globe).[1]

Spread

While recognition of this phenomeon likely existed offline for, perhaps, decades, one of the earliest mentions of it online comes from a YouTube video, "PEPSI CAN SECRET MESSAGE," which was published on June 27th, 2007 by user 'DanjaMouse10000.' As of April 2016, the video has 3.1 million views. At 1:55, he flips the Pepsi can to demonstrate "isded." The video (shown below, left) has since been deleted but has been re-uploaded on Dailymotion.

On January 21st, 2009, YouTuber quexmeohoh published the video "Obama is dead – SUBLIMINAL HIDDEN PEPSI MESSAGE!!!!!!!" The video (show below, right) attempts to equate the Pepsi globe with the logo for the President Barack Obama campaign. Within nine years, the post has received more than 1.5 million views.

On August 2nd, 2012, YouTuber Illuminati Amy shared a deleted video from the deleted account You Know I'm Right in which the illusion is explored. Within five years, the post (shown below) received more than 11,000 views.

Image of the "isded" logo appeared frequently in the comments for FunnyJunk images. On March 1st, 2015, FunnyJunk[2] user Shadwstryker posted a series of images of people getting injured, using the "Isded" image to open the series. The post (shown below, left) received more than 1,000 upvotes.

On March 4th, 2017, Facebook [3] Tom Rowland posted a variation of the meme in the Smith's Shitposting group, referencing The Smiths' album "The Queen Is Dead" by writing "The Queen" next to "Isded." The post (shown below, center) received more than 3,900 reactions and 440 shares in one year.

The following day, Redditor [4] euansidwell posted a version in the /r/Kanye subreddit, replacing "The Queen" with "Walt Disney". The post (shown below, right) received more than 3,200 (87% upvoted) and 70 comments.
