“Juanda had trips” comes from a notable hand of poker played during a cash game of the “Aussie Millions” poker series. In the hand in question, which appeared on Youtube in 2008, Tony G flops a royal flush, the highest hand in Hold ‘em poker and one which occurs extremely rarely. After Tony G inevitably wins the pot, right at the end of the video, John Juanda states “I had trips”. This phrase developed into a meme due to Juanda’s bizarrely proud manner of announcing that he had triple Queens in the face of a vastly superior hand.
Since the video’s appearance, it has become a common sight on Youtube poker videos for people to leave the comment “Juanda had trips”, or variations thereof, even in videos which do not feature John Juanda. The original video has been reposted several times on Youtube: one video compiles clips of royal flushes from various poker games along with clips from films such as Rounders and Casino Royale, following each one with Juanda asserting “I had trips”. The meme is yet to spread outside the world of online poker videos.
