About

KIMONOPRINCESS is a popular soundtrack from a Japanese arcade music video game Dance Dance Revolution X2 which is produced by KONAMI as a part of BEMANI line.[1]

Since late 2009, this happy hardcore tune has been occasionally a music resource for online parodies : YTPMVs and MADs, through YouTube and the Japanese video sharing service Nico Nico Douga (NND).

Origin

KIMONOPRINCESS is written by the Japanese composer Junko Karashima, better known as her alias “jun”. And the vocalist for this song is Anna Kaelin, a singer and songwriter from Salt Lake City, Utah. She also sings NAOKI’s “You are a Star” in these games.

This song was first released as an extra track for Dance Dance Revolution X2 released for PS2 console in North America in November 2009. And it was also included in Dance Evolution which was released for Xbox 360 Kinect in November 2010.[2] In each of the games, this song is famous for its extreme difficulty among game players.

Spread

Similar to other songs in BEMANI line such as RED_ZONE, AGEHA (GentleMentleMen), Evans, Can-Can and so on, KIMONOPRINCESS was ported to YTPMVs and MADs.

The earliest hit in this video series in YTPMV was Kimono Dennis posted in March 21st, 2010. This video featured Dennis Reynolds from an American sitcom It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia[3], and became an overnight success due to an awesome song and epic lulz for Dennis dancing on the right.

Many response following the style of this video have been posted to YouTube.

Meanwhile, KAIBA♡PRESIDENT which is the MAD video using this song and featuring Enemy Controller had been already posted to NND as one of the entries for the 4th music video game MAD festival in November 2009.[4] However, this video couldn’t gain much favor with other MAD editors, and this song hasn’t been able to attain the position of popular music resource in MADs on NND.
