part of a series on Nico Nico Douga

About

Kumikyoku Nico Nico Douga (組曲『ニコニコ動画』) is what video medleys featured on the popular Japanese video sharing site, Nico Nico Douga, are called. It is also the title of the most popular video in the official series. They usually mostly compose of songs made famous on the site.

The original video was created by Shimo (しも), a user of the site. After he started making the medleys, other people joined in on the fun and now, more than 15,000 Kumikyoku videos can be found on Nico Nico Douga and more versions can be found on other video sharing sites such as Youtube and Dailymotion.

Original Series

Nico Nico Douga Chuudoku no Kata e Okuru Ikkyoku (ニコニコ動画中毒の方へ贈る一曲), the ever first video, was uploaded on Nico Nico Douga on June 5, 2007.

A second medley was uploaded on June 23 of the same year and was called Kumikyoku Nico Nico Douga (組曲『ニコニコ動画』). This medley is considered the most popular in the series.

The second version’s views launched to over 1.8 million in no more than 2 months. From July to August in 2007, the video maintained first position in number of views, with over 3.3 million comments, and was in over 100,000 Japanese mylists at the height of its popularity. Its popularity sky-rocketed even more through the popularity of the series’ subsequent videos.

On September 9, 2007, the original author uploaded Nico Nico Douga Monogatari.wav (ニコニコ動画物語.wav). Because of its length, there is no single video for it on Youtube and is instead broken up into three parts. To see a full version, go here.

On April 11, 2008, the original author uploaded Nico Nico Douga Ryuuseigun (ニコニコ動画流星群).

The last official video was titled Nanairo no Nico Nico Douga (七色のニコニコ動画) and was uploaded on June 3, 2009.

Derivatives

A site called Nico Nico Douga Medley Database features a good number of derivatives. Their Youtube counterpart is called KumikyokuNND.

On December 26, 2007, Lantis, a Japanese music company, published 「らき☆すたRe-Mix002〜『ラキスタノキワミ、アッー』【してやんよ】〜」, a mixed music collection based on the hit animé series, Lucky Star. One of the songs in the collection, 「組曲『らき☆すた動画』」, was to pay tribute to the creativity of Kumikyoku Nico Nico Douga.

Here are a few more variations on Youtube:

Wait, as a kumikyoku nerd, wasn’t Monogatari the first mix? And I didn’t Urakumikyoku on your list //irrelevant//

Uh, I have an MP3 of Monogatari is anyone wants it. The worst part yet is I have memorized half of those songs in English and Japanese. Please shoot me now.

Urakumikyoku. The only version they had was a karaoke. But I hope it’s pretty self explanatory.

And a SZS version has to account for something, right?

Nope. You can check out the Wikipedia article if you want to. It clearly states that “For a Person Addicted to Nico Nico Douga” (aka Nico Nico Douga Chuudoku no Kata e Okuru Ikkyoku) was the first one out of them all.

Urakumikyoku and the SZS versions must just be two other derivatives made by other people. Like it says on the bottom of my article, just add the video in here to share it to the KYM community and everything will be splenidferous!

Don’t worry. You’re not the only one who has memorized several Kumikyoku medleys. I’ve got them stuck on my head as well, but I never bothered to check out their English counterparts.

As far as I know, It went
Chuudoku
Kumikyoku
Urakumikyoku
Monogatari
Ryuuseigun
Ryuuseimusume
Nanairo

There have been a number of others, such as Shiritori and RGB (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gDJHY7WblY4&feature=player_profilepage
and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D9yTt6ZHKZs&feature=related),
But The “main” ones (Chuudoku-Nanairo) are all made by the same person.

But Urakumikyoku is not listed as a video that Shimo has made in Kumikyoku Wiki and it’s not listed as an official medley as well in Wikipedia. Go check it out for yourselves:

I gave the article better videos than what I originally placed in here. Your turn to evaluate this article, fellow researchers.

I did a little resaerch and I believe that Ryuuseimusume is actually not part of Shimo’s official series. There are only 5 videos in his mylist(his uploads list) (http://www.nicovideo.jp/mylist/1535765)
and they are Chuudoku no Hou e Okuru Ikkyoku, Kumikyoku, Monogatari, Ryuuseigun, and Nanairo.
In fact, it turns out that gigi-net was actually the creator of the Ryuuseimusume video which is linked to on the main page of the wiki.
