I’m beginning to think that the people commenting here are right. I let my love for this “trend” get in the way of my important evaluating techniques which is need to criticize submissions seiously. Now that I’m actually being serious about it, I cannot see how this trend has been subject to imitation and parodying to the point that it virally spreads throughout the interwebz in a mid-masive to a massive scale. Anyways, you got the first vid wrong. If we take Mario Sequencer into consideration (since it IS the first version of the music program), the ever first vid uploaded on the ‘tube would be this one, which is Ruby’s stage theme from the game Panel de Pon. It was uploaded on June 27, 2007 by a user called zvsp507.

But, if we take Nico Nico Douga into consideration, an even earlier video was uploaded two months before the Youtube one. The first video to feature the program on NND was a 23 second video featuring the main riff from the song “The Wind’s Yearning” from the hit video game, Chrono Trigger. It was uploaded on the site on April 13, 2007. Unfortunately, I can’t embed NND vids, so instead, I’ll give you a taste of what the song sounds like by giving you the original version of the song (if you don’t already know it).

P.S. I think you should re-rename this article as “Mario Paint Composer/Mario Sequencer” to reference both programs because while most vids of this meme on Youtube were made with Composer, most vids on NND were made with Sequencer.

Also, I’ll try to upload versions of the vids which feature musical memes so as to help you with the article.

By the way, the reason why I can’t add more than three videos is because after I put in another video, every video before it (expect for the TTFATF video) becomes that video. I got no idea why.

Deadpool, not a meme. It is a program used to create music with placement of notes, like an automatic scrolling sheet music. If this was a meme, player pianos would be the beginning of it.

Can you use this to make funny videos of the news, like autotune did? No. Can you use this to put non-fitting music behind previously recorded vocals, like songsmith? Possibly, but it hasn’t been done yet.

This is a tough call. 8-bit songs, or “chiptunes”, are a genre. Are genres memes?

Lots of people make this kind of music using other tools. See http://www.8bitpeoples.com/ for examples of people making music with the GameBoy, for instance.

Then there’s hybrid bands like Anamanaguchi who blend hacked NES soundboards with electric guitars.

Its still awesome, don’t get me wrong… but I wonder if saying this is a meme is like saying the piano is a meme.

@ Onder I’m not talking about 8 bit music as a whole genre. I’m talking about Mario Paint compositions. I know lots of people make music with other programs, consoles, and other stuff like that. But this entry is specifically talking about Mario Paint compositions.

Even though I argued against it, I’m pretty happy that it made it anyway. I do love this sort of thing. I can’t count the hours I’ve spent in MPC myself, let alone the hours I’ve spent listening to chiptunes.

Ugh, all these videos and only ONE that’s actually Mario Paint? Composer is a cheap knockoff. Anybody could transpose sheet music into composer, it’s too easy, it doesn’t sound anything like an SPC, and it overshadows the game it was based on. It takes skill to work within the restrictions of the actual game and still produce quality music, like TomBobBlender. There’s no doubt MPC is a meme, but is it one worth knowing? I’d say not as long as people keep being so prudish about emulation and copping out of creating real Mario Paint songs.

I agree that it takes a lot of effort to make a song in mario paint, but a lot of songs are just not possible. Of course TBB has got around all the setbacks and made some awesome remixes that I couldn’t ever imagine making, but your point about MPC being a cheap knockoff is harsh. Not many users actually just transpose sheet music, a lot do it by ear (like me), as well as add their own style or remix the song a little. Watch something by adolfobaez, who still has to work with restrictions, and get back to me on that one. They’re completely different restrictions but it’s still a similar medium to work on. (There’s also a lot of use of soundfonts and high speeds to remove some restrictions, which breaks the purpose but still requires effort).

Also I don’t think it’s a meme, your definition of meme seems to be very extensive… but sure.
