Mario Paint Songs (1992)

added Oct 10, 2009 at 02:22AM UTC

About

Mario Paint songs are musical compositions created by individuals using Mario Music Composer, an audio-editing tool included in the popular SNES video game Mario Paint. For more information about the game itself, see the section below. Today, popular video-sharing sites like YouTube and Nico Nico Douga feature thousands of Mario Paint songs made with third-party softwares like Mario Paint Composer and Mario Sequencer.

Mario Paint

Nintendo’s Mario Paint was originally released in August 1992. As one of the earlier efforts to bring art & music into video games, it allowed users to create their own artworks using image and audio-editing tools included in the package. Yet despite the creative freedom given to individual players, there were little means to export any of these artworks and share them with larger audiences.

Origins

Mario Paint Composer (Released in 2007) Mario Sequencer / (Released in 2006)

In 2006, online popularity of Mario Paint songs saw its first leap when a team of Japanese developers released a freeware called Mario Sequencer, the first desktop version of Mario Music Composer. Eclipsing with the rise of video-sharing communities, the software and its musical compositions became a hit on Japanese memetic hubs like Nico Nico Douga. The earliest NND video of Mario Paint song was uploaded in April 2007, which was a 23-second composition of “The Wind’s Yearning” originally featured in the video game Chrono Trigger.

In 2007, an online flash game site called UnFun Games released Mario Paint Composer, yet another downloadable version of the original tool. Seen by many as an opportunity to relive their early 90s childhood, people downloaded the program and began making Mario Paint renditions of popular tunes found in videogames, animes, television shows and etc. The earliest YouTube rendtion was uploaded in June 2007, which featured the “Ruby Stage” theme from the videogame Panel de Pon.

Today

  • Today, Mario Paint compositions have taken on a life of their own; there are over 9000 videos of Mario Paint compositions posted on YouTube and Nico Nico Douga.
  • Currently, the most popular of these videos is a version of Through the Fire and the Flames, with almost 3,000,000 views on YouTube. The composers have even formed their own community, with forums and even a wiki.

Well done, sir. This is a definite meme that I am aware of.

You have some information wrong and missing, so I shall help you with this. First of all, don’t call it “Mario Sequencer”. Call it by its proper name, Mario Paint Composer. Secondly, you’ve only added TTFAF and several videos of “PaintRoll’d”. I suggest that you not only add in recreations of IRL songs, but original compositions as well by great MPC composers such as…

Levus28 (who made the TTFAF vid)

brianLED

buckyboy2009

Thepillows93

… and several other composers that I can’t remember as of now.

I used to listen to these things all day because they were so amazingly made! How could I have forgotten about them!

I’m beginning to think that the people commenting here are right. I let my love for this “trend” get in the way of my important evaluating techniques which is need to criticize submissions seiously. Now that I’m actually being serious about it, I cannot see how this trend has been subject to imitation and parodying to the point that it virally spreads throughout the interwebz in a mid-masive to a massive scale. I hate to say it because I love this, I really do. But, this has to go to deadpool.

Damn.

YES! Reconsideration from Chris brings my spirit up!

Anyways, you got the first vid wrong. If we take Mario Sequencer into consideration (since it IS the first version of the music program), the ever first vid uploaded on the ‘tube would be this one, which is Ruby’s stage theme from the game Panel de Pon. It was uploaded on June 27, 2007 by a user called zvsp507.

But, if we take Nico Nico Douga into consideration, an even earlier video was uploaded two months before the Youtube one. The first video to feature the program on NND was a 23 second video featuring the main riff from the song “The Wind’s Yearning” from the hit video game, Chrono Trigger. It was uploaded on the site on April 13, 2007. Unfortunately, I can’t embed NND vids, so instead, I’ll give you a taste of what the song sounds like by giving you the original version of the song (if you don’t already know it).

P.S. I think you should re-rename this article as “Mario Paint Composer/Mario Sequencer” to reference both programs because while most vids of this meme on Youtube were made with Composer, most vids on NND were made with Sequencer.

Also, I’ll try to upload versions of the vids which feature musical memes so as to help you with the article.

@ Jostin Asunicon Thanks for the suggestions. I will edit my article so it will be as accurate as possible. By the way, the reason why I can’t add more than three videos is because after I put in another video, every video before it (expect for the TTFATF video) becomes that video. I got no idea why.

Deadpool, not a meme. It is a program used to create music with placement of notes, like an automatic scrolling sheet music. If this was a meme, player pianos would be the beginning of it.

Can you use this to make funny videos of the news, like autotune did? No. Can you use this to put non-fitting music behind previously recorded vocals, like songsmith? Possibly, but it hasn’t been done yet.

/yawn, wake me up when there’s a bunch of Courage Wolf macros set to MPC tunes.

This is a tough call. 8-bit songs, or “chiptunes”, are a genre. Are genres memes?

Lots of people make this kind of music using other tools. See http://www.8bitpeoples.com/ for examples of people making music with the GameBoy, for instance.

Then there’s hybrid bands like Anamanaguchi who blend hacked NES soundboards with electric guitars.

Its still awesome, don’t get me wrong… but I wonder if saying this is a meme is like saying the piano is a meme.

Ugh, all these videos and only ONE that’s actually Mario Paint? Composer is a cheap knockoff. Anybody could transpose sheet music into composer, it’s too easy, it doesn’t sound anything like an SPC, and it overshadows the game it was based on. It takes skill to work within the restrictions of the actual game and still produce quality music, like TomBobBlender. There’s no doubt MPC is a meme, but is it one worth knowing? I’d say not as long as people keep being so prudish about emulation and copping out of creating real Mario Paint songs.

I agree that it takes a lot of effort to make a song in mario paint, but a lot of songs are just not possible. Of course TBB has got around all the setbacks and made some awesome remixes that I couldn’t ever imagine making, but your point about MPC being a cheap knockoff is harsh. Not many users actually just transpose sheet music, a lot do it by ear (like me), as well as add their own style or remix the song a little. Watch something by adolfobaez, who still has to work with restrictions, and get back to me on that one. They’re completely different restrictions but it’s still a similar medium to work on. (There’s also a lot of use of soundfonts and high speeds to remove some restrictions, which breaks the purpose but still requires effort).

Also I don’t think it’s a meme, your definition of meme seems to be very extensive… but sure.
