Marriage Proposal Reaction Videos are video recordings of orchestrated events in which a person asks for their partner's hand in marriage.

Origin

The earliest known marriage proposal video was uploaded by YouTuber Dave11 on October 25th, 2005, which featured a woman rejecting a man's proposal in the middle of a basketball court (shown below).



Spread

On July 9th, 2006, YouTuber GavinMacCall uploaded footage of a man proposing to a woman on a beach using an airplane pulling a banner reading "Melissa Roberson how about Melissa MacCall Will you marry me?" (shown below, left). In the first seven years, the video gained over 220,000 views and 130 comments. On January 2nd, 2007, YouTuber David Cooper submitted a video in which a Fox News reporter accidentally botches a wedding proposal (shown below, right), which received more than 1.36 million views and 2,600 comments in the following six years.



On July 27th, 2008, YouTuber Luke Goddard uploaded a video featuring a marriage proposal held by a tree that the couple had carved their initials into one year prior (shown below, left). In next five years, the video accumulated upwards of 730,000 views and 1,700 comments. On June 8th, 2009, the DisneyParks YouTube channel published a musical marriage proposal at Disneyland (shown below, right), which garnered over 6.04 million views and 22,000 comments in four years.



On June 4th, 2010, YouTuber Ellenfunhouse uploaded a recording of an elaborate marriage proposal orchestrated by a filmographer (shown below, left), featuring a choreographed dance to the 2008 song "Shake It" by Metro Station. In the first three years, the video gained more than 2.05 million views and 1,200 comments. On March 6th, 2011, YouTuber Chris Nicholson submitted a video in which a dog attacks a camera while it is recording a marriage proposal (shown below, right), receiving upwards of 680,000 views in the next two years.



On May 25th, 2012, YouTuber Isaac Lamb uploaded the world's first lip dub marriage proposal, in which a woman is seated in the back of a car while a group of friends perform a choreographed lip sync to the 2011 song "Marry You" by Bruno Mars (shown below, left). In the following year, the video accumulated over 21.6 million views and 28,000 comments. On February 13th, 2013, the PrankvsPrank YouTube channel published a video featuring several fake marriage proposal rejections (shown below, right). Within six months, the video gained more than 10.7 million views and 33,600 comments.

Movie Trailer Marriage Proposal

On May 16th, 2011, Georgia resident Matt Still uploaded a video in which he proposes to his girlfriend Ginny Joiner at a movie theater using a custom-made film trailer (shown below). The footage simultaneously shows the 6-minute trailer featuring Matt Still as the protagonist, as well as Joiner's live reaction during the screening. Within the first three years, the video received upwards of 27.5 million views and 47,800 comments.
