As noobmaister said, this particular meme was actually seen far earlier than 2001 although the article claims otherwise. Finnish comedian tv-show called Kummeli made two sketches named “The world in flames”. These two sketches make fun of Sweden’s participation in the world wars which was insignificant compared to other europian countries and especially Finland. Characters in the sketches are very stereotypical swedish males who, according to majority of finns, are all gay. The show was on air in the 90’s and therefore presented the “meanwhile in X”-meme much earlier than the “meanwhile in Australia” picture although I’m not sure it will count as meme since meme is an internet phenomenon. All in all, as an finn I feel as my duty to tell you all that the article has some false facts conserning the meme’s original appearence. Or atleast my spidersense is tingling that way.

You’re welcome, jacplack97! That’s what America is for! _

“Meanwhile in Japan” is a common occurrence for normal people (they find far stranger things than I’ve ever seen in manga or anime thus far).

+1 confirm!

In the french comedy La cité de la peur (1994) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0109440/
in the middle of a chase scene the movie cut to a scene in spanish named : Pendant ce temps là à Vera Cruz (Meanwhile in Vera Cruz) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=27tbHlDKiko

if you search “Pendant ce temps là à Vera Cruz” in google you’ll see it’s widely used
