Basically, when someone says I hate… then something else, you would respond:
you hate…?
WAT BOUT MEAT BALLS?
YOU HATE MEATBALLS?
OMG U HATE MEATBALLS DONT TALK TO ME!!!!1!

This meme can be virtually be used in any context and may be adapted to change meatballs to something else.

Other variations have been seen which instead of using meatballs, the person would use the thing that the other person said they hated, for example:
"Person A: I hate emos."
"Person B: WAT? YOU HATE EMOS????"
"Person B: WAT HAVE EMOS EVER DONE TO YOU???"
