Misheard Lyrics are a series of videos popular on YouTube that play a song, but display texts that shows incorrect, but humorous lyrics, sounding similar enough that the viewer could mistake the misheard lyrics for the original. Most videos either sport pictures relating to certain misheard lyrics but not necessarily making sense, or have a series of pictures consisting of stick figures acting out the misheard lyrics. Some videos use a combination of the two. The most popular misheard lyrics videos sell T-shirts relating to their videos.
Origin
People have always misinterpreted songs when listening to them or simply made up what it sounded like if they did not know the actual lyrics. The term used to describe this is Mondegreen. In 2006, the idea to play the original song while displaying the misheard lyrics came to life.
Spread
By August of 2006, multiple misheard lyrics videos were on YouTube, including the most popular one, Wishmaster the Misheard Lyrics, with 11 million views today.
Various websites today are dedicated or partially dedicated to finding commonly misheard lyrics, such as Kiss This Guy and Am I Right
