About
Muncher is a monster set to appear in the upcoming film Ghostbusters: Afterlife. After making a brief appearance in the film's trailer, a figurine of the character reappeared in a 2021 episode of MasterChef Junior: Spain, becoming the subject of jokes as it spread around Twitter.
Origin
Muncher makes a split-second appearance in the trailer for Ghostbusters: Afterlife, which debuted on December 19th, 2019 (shown below). The film's release has been delayed due to the COVID-19 Pandemic.
In January of 2021, a model of the character appeared on the set of a Ghostbusters-themed episode of MasterChef Junior: Spain. On January 21st, 2021, Slashfilm[1] covered the appearance as a "reveal" of Muncher.
Spread
After Slashfilm covered the character, users on Twitter began parodying Muncher by suggesting it looked like other characters from pop culture. For example, Twitter user @WillMenaker[2] joked that the character looked like Grum from Tim and Eric, gaining over 2,200 likes (shown below, left). Twitter user @pixelatedboat[3] made a similar joke using a picture of Prince Philip, gaining over 250 retweets and 3,800 likes (shown below, right).
Other users commented on the character's appearance. For example, user @davidlsims[4] joked, "in the spirit of unity I think it's time for America to come together and support Muncher. he's doing his best," gaining over 30 retweets and 670 likes (shown below, left). User @seanoconnz[5] tweeted, "In the script, Muncher's catchphrase is '(long groan) Muncher needs to cum,'" gaining over 60 retweets and 250 likes (shown below, right).
