Next level X maneuver is a common phrase used to describe a method of doing an otherwise mundane task in a way that is perceived to be epic or extreme compared to its normal method of execution. Examples of this include "next level sitting maneuver", "next level deadpool maneuver", "next level toasting maneuver", etc. In proper form, the X value is replaced by a verb or noun.
Origin
The phrase originates from an episode of the online cooking show EpicMealTime entitled 'Breakfast of Booze', which was uploaded to Youtube on November 30, 2010. The original line is "Next level breakfast maneuver", and occurs at 1:27 in the video. Next level breakfast maneuver was spoken by Harley Morenstein, host and creator of Epicmealtime.
Almost immediately after the video was uploaded, the comments were filled with people quoting or paraphrasing the line. The line stood out because of its out-of-place nature, as the simple task of egg-washing breakfast was being described with verbose language.
Popularity and Spread
By early December 2010, next level breakfast maneuver had become exploitable, with the word breakfast being replaced by other words relevant to the situation. This exploitable form was first proliferated in Youtube comments, but quickly spread to social networking sites such as Twitter and Facebook where variations became popular status updates. The phrase has also appeared in many blogs and forums, often in the form of a title:
