About

Noseless GIFs are a series of animated GIF images featuring celebrities in which the midline portion of the subject’s face has been cropped out to make him or her look monstrous, similar to the effect of the photoshop meme known as “Sloth Facing.”.

Origin

On January 5th, 2013, Redditor Dreasdif118 submitted a screenshot of a scene from Lord of The Ring in which Frodo (portrayed by Elija Wood) appears to be noseless in an /r/funny post titled “Had a glitch on my computer…”[7] The post soon reached the front page after garnering 19,939 up votes and 384 comments prior to its archival.

Spread

On February 8th, 2013, Redditor xPye created the subreddit /r/nonose[3] to curate animated GIFs of celebrities and public figures without their noses. On April 8th, a collection of notable uploads from the subreddit was highlighted by Mashable in an article titled “12 ‘No Nose’ GIFs That Will Delight and Horrify You,” followed by GIFstasche’s “13 Noseless GIFs That May Haunt You” on May 23rd and BuzzFeed’s “14 Noseless GIFs That Will Haunt You” on August 8th. In addition, hundreds of noseless GIFs can be found on Reddit and Tumblr under the tag #noseless GIF.
