Solar Sect of Mystic Wisdom ~ Nuclear Fusion” (Japanese : 霊知の太陽信仰 ~ Nuclear Fusion), usually called “Nuclear Fusion” for short, is a popular soundtrack from Touhou. As well as other soundtracks in this doujin video game series, many remixes for this song has been created in doujin/internet community, and this is a well-used musical resource for MAD videos on the Japanese video sharing service Nico Nico Douga (NND).

This song is Utsuho Reiuji’s (nickname: Okuu) boss theme from the 11th Touhou game Subterranean Animism which was first released at the 74th Comiket in August 16th 2008.[1]

Okuu’s Nuclear Fusion Dojo

“Okuu’s Nuclear Fusion Dojo” (お空のニュークリアフュージョン道場) is a famous remix of this song made by the doujin gourp IOSYS.[2] It was first released on the Touhou remix album Touhou All Year Round (東方年柄年中 Touhou Nengara Nenjuu), released by IOSYS at the 76th Comic market in August 15th, 2009, and this promotion flash animation made by Urushi was released on the special page for this album in August 1st, 2009.[3] As well as their previous works such as Overdrive, "Cirno’s Perfect Math Class" and "Usatei", the song and its promotion video includes many parodies of internet fads and subcultures: Yukkuri Shiteitte ne!, Angry German Kid, Shimajiro: Toilet Training, Yaranaika?, Shuzo Matsuoka, Billy’s Bootcamp, Sergeant Hartman from Full Metal Jacket, many Shift-JIS arts in 2channel and many Japanese TV shows and commercial movies.

Soon after the video game was released, the soundtracks in it were reuploaded to NND. Many Touhou fans began making remix, fan arts and other derivatives for this game, and Nuclear Fusion was frequently set to a subject of their activities. In the field of MADs, the earliest hit in reusing this song was posted to NND on September 28th, 2008, titled “Airmoto Sect of Soka”.[4] This is also a derivatives of Hissu Amoto San / Airmoto phenomenon.

As of September 2011, the amount of videos related to this song is over 600.[5] And “Okuu’s Nuclear Fusion Dojo” has been also reused in a few parodies and MADs on NND since after the release of Touhou All Year Round. Over 150 videos related to this remix have been posted to there.[6] Additionally, this song was also imported to YouTube Poop Music Videos (YTPMVs) on YouTube.[7]

Utsuho Reiuji is the only boss in the series that gives the player a warning before the spellcard begins. This warning goes by showing “Caution!!” and the radiation warning symbol (☢) on screen, combined with klaxons blaring in the background.[8]

Because Utsuho Reiuji is the only boss with this particular warning, fans often combine this with her and the song. Therefore, remixes of the song commonly feature “☢CAUTION!!☢” in the title or the particular caution message is shown during the video. Klaxons can also often be heard in MADs and YTPMVs.
