Willam “Billy” Mays Jr. (July 20th, 1958 – June 28th, 2009) was born in Mckees Rocks, Pennsylvania and moved to Atlantic City, New Jersey, at 25 where he began selling products seen in infomercials on the boardwalk. He learned the art of selling these items from older pitchmen, pciking up their forceful yet charismatic style which he proceeded to take on the road for 12 years across the United States. His first commercials for the Orange Glo company began appearing in 1999; promoting housecleaning products including OxiClean, Kaboom, and Orange Clean. Over the following decade, Mays’ enthusiastic pitches became sought after and in April 2009, he began filming a reality television show titled Pitchmen about the experience.
Billy Mays passed away on June 28th, 2009 at the age of 50, just hours after he had a rough landing after a flight into Tampa. An autopsy found that his death was caused by heart disease that may have developed from cocaine use. Digg declared the day to be ALL CAPS DAY in honor of Mays’ memory. Buzzfeed, the Kingdom of Loathing forums and Reddit posted threads about the event. It was also added to Urban Dictionary.
