About

Raped / Ruined Childhood is a meme found in image macros and comments. It usually consists of a picture with a nostalgic subject that one may remember when they were young. The picture will point out something that was unseen previously or add an aspect that is the total opposite of what it was originally conveying, making you look at it from a different perspective, thereby ruining any memories that were had about the subject. This can be done to almost anything with any type of nostalgic value: toys, cartoons, games, etc.

This should NOT be confused with Rule 34 which is the act of making something pornografic.

In these type of images, people will often leave behind the phrase “My childhood in ruins”, “You just raped my childhood”, “My childhood has just been raped”, or something to that effect in the comments section (if one is available).

Impact

Urban Dictionary defines “Raped my Childhood” as follows: “The cliche way to explain one’s anguish over changes made to one’s favorite film, or utter dissapointment over a letdown of a sequel to a much loved film”. This description of the meme can be found in an episode of the TV series South Park, though it was around the Internet before the episode debuted. The episode, titled The China Problem, was making fun of the Indiana Jones movie that had just come out into theaters. This clip shows film makers George Lucas and Steven Spielberg literally raping a memento of one’s childhood.

On January 24, 2011, The humor site Cracked.com, made a list of 17 Images That Will Ruin Your Childhood which showcased the truth or unknown facts of things we know.

This is one short clip, but the entire episode has multiple accounts of Raped Childhoods (literally). Throughout the episode, the focus was mainly on Indiana Jones, and the new movie.

The Nostalgia Critic used the line in his review of Batman and Robin.

Just so everyone knows, raped / ruined childhood is not an offshoot of Rule 34. It is the discovery that the things you enjoyed when you were a kid weren’t entirely so innocent now that you are an adult and the cruel world has made you realize just how much filth is everywhere. A rule 34 picture is designed with the intention of ruining someone’s childhood memories (i.e. a drawing of two cartoon characters having sex), but that is just rule 34.

A true example of a raped / ruined childhood would be if you went back and watch a cartoon, and realized that the animators snuck in a quick cycle of animation where it looks like the characters are humping each other, or a dirty joke or gag that would have went over your childish mind but it is apparent now that you are an adult. Or, it could simply be that your favorite show / movie / game was actually highly subversive, but you did not realize it until you were an adult.

TL;DR version: The key difference between rule 34 and raped / ruined childhood is that rule 34 is meant to take something innocent and then ruin it by re-imagining it as something lewd and foul, whereas raped / ruined childhood is when you realize as an adult that something was wrong with the thing you liked, and you simply didn’t realize it until you were an adult.

Most of these are “mid-teen” memories. Feels old, man!
