The first boards were meant to facilitate game discussion but, further on, other board categories with different purposes were added. Hail Probe “Hail Probe!” is a long-running standing in-joke between users of the freeware space flight simulator “Orbiter” and the associated forums, known simply as the “Orbiter Forum”. It originated in 2002, when Dealer McDope created a series of Soviet-era meshes. Included in these was a basic, green, Luna E3 mesh. The Luna E3 was the first probe to photograph the far side of The Moon, launched atop an R7 booster. This in-joke gained popularity when a post to the old M6 off-topic forums introduced the concept of Hailing Probe to a wider audience with a thread titled The Cult of the Probe. So ensued the second longest-running thread in the old Forum’s history. Without a single flame. The Probe has been hailed a great number of times afterwards; one notable example is during the Winter holidays in the end of 2008 (<a href="http://orbiter-forum.com/showthread.php?t=5947">View thread</a>). Such was the following of the thread that it spanned two years and even spawned Probe Day (4th October — the date of both Luna E3’s launch, and two years earlier, that of Sputnik 1, the first artificial satellite). What I Watched/Expected/Got Possibly originating in 2007 from this thread on <a href="http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=2746741">Something Awful</a>, “What I watched, What I expected, What I got”, is a quick image review of a certain subject (usually an anime or a game). It does not elaborate, it simply shows what the viewer thought the show would be like by comparing it to something else, and then showing their idea of what they got. The most well known of these image reviews is one for the anime ‘Princess Tutu’, which also spawned another meme <a href="http://www.lurkmore.com/wiki/Guitar_Ninjas">Guitar Ninjas</a> which is well-known for being the definition of awesome. The review was a simple one, showing the viewer’s expectation to be a simple magical girl series akin to ‘Cardcaptor Sakura’, albeit with ballet. However, what the viewer actually got was something beyond magical, beyond ballet… it was… AWESOME. The only way to sum up how awesome this series was in one image was to use the mighty guitar ninjas. The challenge to summarize what was gotten is often difficult, yet done right can end up clever and/or hilarious. A review is not always about the plot of the series – sometimes it can overlap into other subjects such as the quality of the animation, or the translation of a series to English.
