Y helo thar

[ Part of a series on Internet Slang or lolspeak/chanspeak ]

About

“Y helo thar” is a slang idiomatic version for the “Why hello there” more common expression. It is a lolspeak/chanspeak sentence that can be usually seen in presentation threads and topics. Coupled with “buttsecks”, the meaning changes and is more about an invitation to a sexual intercourse, in a joking way.
From its creation, and still an active slang today, it has become the newest way to say “hello” to a community in a geek-like fashion.
However, “Y helo thar” isn’t the only existing written version from the slang that can be seen throughtout the intraweb, for there are also, among the most popular, “Y halo thar”, as well as some other lesser known ones like “Y hello thar” or “Y hallo thar”. All depends on the writter way of lolspeaking.

Origin

- November the 5th 1995, Jeff “CJayC” Veasey created GameFAQs.com, a website meant to be a giant database for video game related informations, cheat codes, reviews, game saves, screenshots and so worth, almost all of which is submitted by volunteer contributors.

- November the 7th 1999, Message Boards, coded by Veasey himself, were added to his website. The first boards were meant to facilitate game discussion but, further on, other board categories with different purposes were added.
One of them in particular will greatly caught attention: The LUE board, also known as Life, the Universe and Everything board

According to several articles :

It was originally created to provide a place to discuss such things as religion and existence. LUE has been very controversial in GameFAQs history, and is often viewed as one of the worst boards on the site. Discussion today is usually sex-related and has been for years. LUE is also home to many fads, including the infamous LUEshi (an ASCII image of Mario riding Yoshi created by the user Patamon)

That is where the “Y helo thar” meme came to life.
At first, the expression was often used along with the buttsecks slang, wich was a synonym of the “se><0r t3h f4c3” expression (the embedding Urban Dictionary explanation doesn’t work due to leetspeak but you can be redirected to it via the buttsecks one).
That is, the initial use was roughtly to invite someone in sexual intercourses and was more of a trolling tool toward newcomers.

The sentence became so popular that it was featured in a 2000 contest called Best GameFaq’s word/phrase, ending up juste before the Quarter-Finals, defeated by pwned.

Beyond Gamefaqs

Following the events known as “RevoLUEtion” and “SteriLUEzation” (see the linked articles above for more informations), in the late 2003 and ending up to January the 4th 2004, when Jeff Veasey realized that the LUE board was nothing but trolls, sex-related threads, invasions and headquarters for raids toward other boards and websites, a LiveJournal account hack from a girl who comitted suicide being one of their most famous target, he decided to endorce more strict laws and eventually choose to never grant that board’s access to new users anymore, unless getting 150 in karma, so to be a moderator.
After that, the meme, wich was mostly confined to GameFaqs users, began to spread to chatrooms, other forums and boards (including 4chan) as these instances show:

FPSgameforums

TribalWar forum

AdultSwim board

Every instance from that first from got its first Urban Dictionary entries around 2003/2004:

Y hello thar

Y helo thar

And one for Y Halo thar starting in 2005.

Y.T.M.N.D derivatives

Starting in the mid-2004, each slang variation went to YTMND and, although they’re far from a fad according to their viewcounts there, each one got its own list of YTMND-based creation:

For Y helo thar

For Y halo thar

For Y Hello thar

For Y Hallo thar

On Youtube

One of the first known video involving the meme was a 2003 video from the Conan O’Brien show in wich someone in the audience yelled “Y helo thar” (Youtube version posted in 2006)

The meme, in its evolution with the YTMDs and image macros that began to gather more and more derivatives got a newer meaning of simply “saying” hello to someone or to something.

You can find in this Youtube list numerous people entitling their video with the catchphrase for greeting purpose.

You can find in this DeviantArt list a good collection of pictures or simple titles featuring the well-known slang.

Ultimately, the “Y hello thar” version has been reused for the creation of a forum about what they call Your Daily Source of Randomness

Hail Probe

“Hail Probe!” is a long-running standing in-joke between users of the freeware space flight simulator “Orbiter” and
the associated forums, known simply as the “Orbiter Forum”.

It originated in 2002, when Dealer McDope created a series of Soviet-era meshes. Included in these was a basic, green,
Luna E3 mesh. The Luna E3 was the first probe to photograph the far side of The Moon, launched atop an R7 booster.

When the CCCP Team, co-ordinating on the Orbiter IRC channel, set about writing C++ code for McDope’s meshes, the
generic test object of choice became the Luna E3. Sticking to the naming convention McDope adopted of simply calling
it “Probe”, an in-joke cropped up, by which whenever a developer conducted a flight test, cries of Hail Probe!
would abound.

This in-joke gained popularity when a post to the old M6 off-topic forums introduced the concept of Hailing Probe to a
wider audience with a thread titled The Cult of the Probe. So ensued the second longest-running thread in the old
Forum’s history. Without a single flame.

The Probe has been hailed a great number of times afterwards; one notable example is during the Winter holidays in
the end of 2008 (View thread).

Such was the following of the thread that it spanned two years and even spawned Probe Day (4th October — the date of
both Luna E3’s launch, and two years earlier, that of Sputnik 1, the first artificial satellite).

Unfortunately, with the migration of the Orbiter forums to a new system in Februrary 2006, the thread was not ported.

Joseph Ducreux

Meme
A descendent of the Bayeux Tapestry Meme, this exploitable meme began with the addition of rap-style terms translated into “classy” English and added to the self portrait of 18th Century French Painter Joseph Ducreux. Both it and the Tapestry Meme reconfigure recognized phrases to pseudo-archaic syntax to provide a satisfying challenge of Meme-Translation to the audience.
The portrait, depicting Ducreux grinning mischievously while pointing towards the viewer, has become widespread since the first commonly distributed image reading “Disregard Females, Aquire Currency”.

Artist
Ducreux was an unorthodox portrait artist, interested less in the classical ideas of portraiture used by later French artists David and Ingres. Ducreux had more of what sequential art philosopher Scott McCloud might refer to as an might refer to as an “Formalist” approach, taking the medium to a new ground by tearing down the fourth wall between subject and audience by depicting himself pointing out of the canvas while grinning maniacally, reflecting his belief that facial features could be use to depict personality.

Attraction by 4chan
Perhaps it is this attitude that so attracted the mememakers of 4chan, who saw Ducreux’s smile as one of a gently pedophiliac French-Enlightenment white gang-banger pimp, which (barring French-Enlightenment setting) is essentially everything holds in esteem. Borrowing images like this, along with the Bayeux Tapestry brings a comforting (albeit illusionary) sense of respect and intellectual worth to these mememakers.

Interest

It is quite possible that the inception of this meme with roots in fine art has led to increased internet attention for the artist himself. The chart shows a spike of interest in Ducreux in early 2007, which could be inferred as the first appearance of the meme. The steady growth of interest in Ducreux throughout the year 2009 suggests the possibility of more widespread use of this meme, a revival of the meme, or a simple interest in the real Ducreux.

What is this I don't even

About

The phrase “What is this I don’t even” is commonly used on message boards as a response to someone who posts a ridiculous/stupid/meaningless comment.

Example/Usage:

User 1: “I ate a rabbit head that I found on the street.”

User 2: “What is this I don’t even”

This phrase can be seen as the ‘negative form’ of LOL WUT, whereas the statement doesn’t provide the other user with (much) amusement.

[[Needs research]]

[[ I need a definition from Urban Dictionary and examples from message boards, like 4chan. There should also be some stuff on YTMND. (I can’t go on these sites, because of an internet filter. Sorry for that.
What I Watched/Expected/Got

Possibly originating in 2007 from this thread on Something Awful, “What I watched, What I expected, What I got”, is a quick image review of a certain subject (usually an anime or a game). It does not elaborate, it simply shows what the viewer thought the show would be like by comparing it to something else, and then showing their idea of what they got.

The most well known of these image reviews is one for the anime ‘Princess Tutu’, which also spawned another meme Guitar Ninjas which is well-known for being the definition of awesome. The review was a simple one, showing the viewer’s expectation to be a simple magical girl series akin to ‘Cardcaptor Sakura’, albeit with ballet. However, what the viewer actually got was something beyond magical, beyond ballet… it was… AWESOME. The only way to sum up how awesome this series was in one image was to use the mighty guitar ninjas.

The challenge to summarize what was gotten is often difficult, yet done right can end up clever and/or hilarious. A review is not always about the plot of the series – sometimes it can overlap into other subjects such as the quality of the animation, or the translation of a series to English.

In b4 X

The phrase “In before”, most commonly abbreviated as “in b4” means to post before likely anticipated content or predictable user behavior.

While “in b4” is commonly used on 4chan, it can apply to all forums.

Origin

True origin is unknown, but it is most likely to be coined by 4chan.

One of the earliest archived examples of “in b4” on 4chan is from March 31st, 2007, although it is doubtful that this is the first appearence.

Post No.23351726 from thread 23351072 “Amigara Fault… drrr…drrr…drrr”

in b4 drr…drr…drr

Usage

“In b4” is used when a poster replies before the most likely event or another users posts some specific content or phrase. This is done to avoid said content or provoke lulz at someone who actually posts it afterwards.

A common example are CP threads on 4chan where the thread is amassed with “in b4 404” to indicate they have viewed the thread before a mod deleted it.

Spread

The first (and currently only) Urban Dictionary definition was created on April 30th, 2007 by Frederico Lo Cunto.

An abbreviation used on messageboards like /b/ in anticipation of a certain image, event, or meme occuring.
“In b4 Togepi” = I am sure that any second now, a picture of Togepi will be posted to this thread.

“In b4 b&” = There is no doubt that someone is about to get the banhammer because of their churlish behavior.

“In b4 v&” = I am quite certain that the FBI will soon be showing up to take us all for a ride in the party van, and if such a thing happens, you can’t say I didn’t see it coming.

The first ED article on “In Before X” was created four months later on August 3rd, 2007.

In before X can only be used as the first reply to a thread or comment, and only if that thread or comment is bait: that is, there is a near 100% chance that someone else will reply to the OP using a particular meme, flame, or solution. Saying “in before X”, where X is the anticipated response in question (or a variation thereof), under any other circumstances is rong.

The intent of the OP is irrelevant. Even if he’s completely ignorant of whatever he’s baiting, he is STILL baiting it.

In before X is a troll’s way of bragging that he got to a thread before the anticipated reply could be posted, thus mocking all future posters to that thread for their slowness.

soon it brought to attention to the internet
many people took to their own side of the war
a person who is pro-skub is A person who has yet to realize the fact that skub is terrible
while someone who is anti-skub is One who doesn’t see the glorious benefits in that which is skub.

if you are Pro Skub then you believe that:
skub does everything good and creates all good things.

How ever if you are Anti-skub then you believe:
skub is evil it does everything evil and wrong you believe the it is the creation of all evil things

what is skub?
Skub is not an actual object. It is a symbol for anything that could ignite a heated argument. Its nonexistence serves to emphasize the futility of such arguments

Spirit/Office/University Lipdub

I think there is a sub-meme of the Meme “One take”, branching out from the Connected Ventures video: SPIRIT LIPDUBS. In various forms…

First, Office Lipdub, whether they are one-take or not, a couple years ago it really felt like it was the team building activity of the holidays celebration, some were at the initiative of a few employees and some were definitely sponsored by the company management (and professionally set up), as if any company that wanted to be considered a cool company (to recruit or to sell more) had to upload company lipdub on youtube or on their press website… At first as most internet meme it was mostly Internet/Communication companies but it has quickly widened to any type of companies.

A few examples, sorry most of those are French, but Im sure the meme is worldwide.
- AOL : this one is the first famous French one/big one done Venture Connected style, and that has been massively shared among online French companies http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lq5XcdKoKLc
- Groupe Beumanoir : its a multi-brand clothing company, so its basically a lipdubbed fashion show, its definitely sponsored by the management as a team building event, its perfectly staged, choregraphed, synched http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X0XjHhhamDQ
- Toys R’Us : I think this one particularly good as well : location all the rows of the shop give really good movement and the shop itself provide funny accessorizes, the genuine fun & average joe style of the participants is heart warming, its prepared but its not staged like the Beaumanoir one, they are both great examples of the 2 different types of company lipdubs http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sjvUl-F94
- zaOza : this one is interesting as its a multi location one, across Paris Berlin Marseille offices, but transition are flawless and you can barely noticed its 3 locations, you can identify Berlin by all the beers http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L6YOEvhNcPs
- Kia Motors : This one is not a One Take, but its very well edited and synched, and the choice of the song is great for this kind of editing http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zl1e5alBOPk
- RTL radio group : one of the reason why this one was somewhat famous is because among the employees that participate several are radio host, of the various radios of the group, who are also famous TV show host in France, it would be like having a lipdub with Jay Leno, David Letterman Oprah and others at the same time, at the small French level of course. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FsRXBNjxgp4
- Poulets de Loué – I selected this one for 2 reasons to show that lip dub trend has reached every industry, and to show that from just lip-singing more and more lipdub project try to promote messages as well, here traditional poultry farming (no battery/ only outdoor), the song says “no no nothing has changed, every things keeps going the same” footage compare current farming with a few old footage of the company but most of the videos black & white videos have been shot for the lipdub “old style” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6it07Uq_vRM

2/And after company lipdub… University Lipdub, if you can build team spirit in a company, just imagine how much you can do with student to show shcool spirit…
- UQAM, University of Quebec Montreal : A very big hit on youtube with more than 2.5 millions to date as it’s a very good lipdub : a lot of people (172 students), location is perfect for the one take movement, the song is great as it’s the current big hit from Black eyed peas I gotta feeling , staging is professional and creative… at the end of the lipdub you basically just want to go party with them. 1 month of planning for the organizers, 1 day preparation for the students, 2 rehearsals, 2 take, 2d take with no edit…
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-zcOFN_VBVo
- HEC Montreal : the UQAM lipdub actually comes 3 years after the first HEC Montreal lipdub (though not one take)http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jt_kuRPcNM4 , and they have produced several since the latest one already quite big in views on youtube and quite well set up one take http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BID434JaYmk
So its to wonder if there is going to be some kind of rivalry for the best university lipdub on Montreal streets? Well considering the list of business schools, universities and even now high schools producing lipdub during orientation week, student board election campaigns or just for the fun of it, the contest for the most viewed university lipdub is definitely on and its with no surprise there is now even websites dedicated to the phenomenon http://universitylipdub.com

The UQAM lipdub has been so huge, that already a dozen of other I gotta feeling lipdub have been made in a few weeks. The song is particularly fit and fun for this. Would there be a sub² meme to this sub meme, called I gotta feeling lipdub?

3/ As lipdub are all about showing together our spirit and unity around something it’s not surprising that some took it to the next level: Demonstration Lipdub! Wether it is to claim for changes or show your support and opinions!

- Castres <=> Mazamet Highway: Hell, we are French we love to have political or labour claims and demonstrate and here the lipdub has been very nicely used to show why and how much south of Tarn region needs a new highway to connect the people, help them grow business, develop their cities without leaving their region. The song Toi + Moi (You + Me, by an online discovered & produced artist Gregoire) has been rewritten to explain all the benefits expected by getting the highway, just like any classic demonstration hymn.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xj0u9rkg7II

- Quebec city mayor Regis Labeaume: In Quebec city mayor election was held on 1st November and following the success of the UQAM lipdub, NRJ Quebec radio and a supporter group of the current mayor created a lipdub during the campaign before the election, also based on the Black eyed peas song but rewritten to list all his achievements and projects for next mandate. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vIN1OGYxp6M

Lipdub of all Lipdub “Rockcollection”
It all started back in 1977 with the release of Rock Collection song by Laurent Voulzy (original video here), the song tells how everybody have great memories linked to great rock songs, and so the song itself is a medley of famous rock songs… a rockcollection. In 2009 a big web 2.0 event has been set up on youtube by the singer himself, where he invites any group of people to produce a lipdub on one of the rock extract of his original song, and then all those are put together to create a new music video for the Rock Collection song. Well the latest edit is now 19 minutes long and shows many different group of people lipdubbing from primary school classroom to fishmarket, quite traditional companies employees to rugby team players and hair salon employees…
http://www.youtube.com/user/voulzyofficiel
I think it’s a clever and honest way that this singer found to surf on a meme…

DERP

About

“Derp is an expression sometimes used online to signify stupidity, much like the earlier forms of “duh” and “dur.” One of the first recorded instances of the term “derp” comes from a short-lived South Park character, Mr. Derp.

Mr. Derp

In the 34th episode of South Park entitled “The Succubus,” (original airdate April 21st, 1999) the character of Chef has quit his job as the school cafeteria worker, and has been replaced by a new character named Mr. Derp. The character performs slapstick cliche’s, strikes himself on the head with a hammer, and exclaims “Derp!”

Parker and Stone have made further use of their term “derp” in other episodes of South Park including this spoof of Rob Schneider.

Google insights

For some reason, searches for the term “Derp” have climbed in recent years. Many related news links seem to signify that Derp is a dutch word. Further investigation is needed to figure out if there is any relation.

TMI(too much information)

Too much information

TMI: Too much information. Giggly girls texting their friends? LOLcat parodies on forums? Or perhaps, every living single soul on the internet?

Uses

TMI has too obvious usable abilities; one being overload of information. If someone is rambling on for hours and hours on end, talking about everything on (insert religion here)’s green Earth, a simple solution; TMI!!!!(see also tl;dr)

Another use; stopping the person in question before what he says can never be unheard. For instance, if someone is talking about their personal life, their really personal life, and they are getting into detail, siple solution;

Ike Quotes (Super Smash Bros. Brawl)

In March of 2008, Nintendo released the game Super Smash Bros. Brawl, a fighting game for the Wii. One of the playable characters was Ike, a swordman from Fire Emblem and the commander of the Greil Mercenaries. Three quotes from Ike in SSBB quickly became popular on the Internet.
The most popular quote is “I fight for my friends.” In SSBB, this was one of Ike’s victory quotes. This quote has been very commonly used on Youtube.
Pictures relating to this quote include:

Another Ike quote is “You’ll get no sympathy from me.” This was another victory quote. Though fairly popular on Youtube, it’s much more popular for images than videos.

Finally, the last Ike quote is “Prepare yourself.” It was Ike’s side taunt in SSBB. It’s very popular with both videos and images, but not as much as “I fight for my friends.” Typically, in images, it’s used as a pun about Hurricane Ike.
On the Fark.com caption thread The Biden/Palin Debate Meme, from October 15, 2008, users were asked to take some of the photos given in the post and put captions on them. A typical 4pane picture went like this, except with the replacement of actual words:

The Fark thread gained over 270 responses, and turned out to be huge. It is now a quality exploitable, and has spread to sites such as Pundit Kitchen and Macrochan.

About

BRB is an initialism for “be right back.”

The entry for BRB in The Free On-line Dictionary of Computing was added on January 18th, 1998.

BRB has been used in a number of image macros on various sites, often with the crux of the joke lying in an ironic portrayal of a famous person’s death.

Many Lol Jesus images also employ an ironic use of BRB.

B.R.B. sites

People search for LOL the most by far, followed by WTF in second. BRB is more searced-for than GTFO.
