The RuneScape meme (also known as RuneScape Advice and Rune Fag) is a forced meme image macro in the style of Advice Dog created in early 2010. The meme consists of an in-game item from the MMORPG RuneScape, a Rune Full Helm, with text relating to elements of the game, such as the gameplay or the game’s community. The meme largely makes fun of the game and its players or points out strange things gameplay-related.
According to a thread on Reign of Terror, a RuneScape forum, a user posted the first occurence of the meme to memegenerator.com with the name “Runescape” and posted the results in a thread titled “RuneScape meme generator” on February 8, 2010.
The meme then died out until three months later. An alternate version of the meme was created on May 12, 2010 when a user on funnyjunk.com posted his own version of the meme. The image was simply titled “Rune scape Meme?”, had a different background than the original version but the same Rune Full Helm in the center of the image, with text saying, “BUYING RUNE SCIMMY 25K, SELLING RUNE SCIMMY 30K”, an example of the method of making money in the game by buying low and selling high.
The meme expanded on June 25, 2010 when a user posted the original form of the meme on funnyjunk.com with the title “Rune Full Helm Meme.” Other users created their own versions of the meme the next few weeks on the site until it eventually spread to RuneScape-related forums, 4chan, and eventually came to have a separate page from the very first version on memegenerator.com with the name “Rune Fag.”
