Sexually Oblivious Female

About

Sexually Oblivious Female, also known as Sexually Oblivious Girl, is an advice animal image macro series based on a still shot of Nicola Graham from a Funny or Die sketch and captions portraying her as having a naive understanding of sexual slang and innuendo, much akin to Sexually Oblivious Rhino.

Origin

On August 9th, 2011, Funny or Die user OogaBoogaGroup uploaded a sketch video titled "Sexually Oblivious," in which the character Karen Shipley unknowingly makes sexually-suggestive comments while interacting with other people.

On February 4th, 2013, a gallery titled "Introducing Sexually Oblivious Female" was uploaded to the image-sharing site Imgur,^[1] featuring a compilation of image macros using a screen capture from the Funny or Die sketch (shown below), which gained over 8,900 up votes and 600 comments in the first six months.

Precursor

Sexually Oblivious Rhino is an advice animal image macro series featuring a portrait of a rhino on purple background, which was created on the image macro website Meme Generator as early as August of 2009. Like Sexually Oblivious Female, the captions typically include misunderstandings of sexual innuendo.

Spread

On the following day, Redditor TrapperKeeperGuy submitted a Sexually Oblivious Female image macro to the /r/AdviceAnimals^[3] subreddit, which joked about confusing the missionary sexual position with church attendance (shown below, left). Prior to being archived, the post received upwards of 5,200 up votes and 70 comments. On February 26th, the men's interest blog Guyism^[5] posted a slideshow of notable examples from the series. On March 14th, 2013, Redditor Paulthekid10-4 posted an image macro mocking the lack of health benefits Starbucks employees receive (shown below, right), which garnered more than 1,300 up votes and 20 comments in the following five months.

For several months, the advice animal remained inactive until August 14th, when Redditor dddash submitted an image macro titled "Sexually Oblivious Girlfriend" to the /r/AdviceAnimals^[2] subreddit, which featured the caption "Spread my cheeks apart? / But I'm already smiling" (shown below). Within 22 hours, the post garnered upwards of 12,000 up votes and 150 comments. On the same day, Redditor Fullcountfastball submitted an image macro depicting a misunderstand of the word "come" as a synonym for sexual climax (shown below, right), which gained over 2,600 up votes and 40 comments in the first 12 hours.

Identity

Karen Shipley, the female character from the Funny or Die sketch, was played by actress Nicola Graham^[8], who later decided to expand her character into a web series. On March 31st, 2013, Graham uploaded a second sketch video titled "A Meme's Life" (shown below) wherein she further explores the character of Karen Shipley. As of August 2013, Graham has uploaded 13 episodes in the Sexually Oblivious web series.
