Shit Was So Cash is a copypasta from the latter half of 2007. Originating from a post on the 4chan imageboard /b/, the copypasta is a sexually explicit rant in which the poster berates the community while portraying oneself as an alpha male (similar to the Navy Seal Copypasta.). Shit Was So Cash remains one of the most infamous copypastas on the internet and has maintained steady usage since its origin. In addition to the copypasta, an image associated with the text of a man holding a bottle of vodka with his arm around a woman inspired a series of image edits that correspond to the text's content.

Origin

The original post was made in mid-to-late 2007 on 4chan's /b/ board. The original post featured the copypasta along with an image of a young man holding a bottle of vodka with his arm around what appeared to be his girlfriend, as supported by the text (shown below).

Prior to its usage in the copypasta, the phrase "That Shit Was So Cash" was used as a slang expression used to describe a positive experience. On February 8th, 2008, Urban Dictionary ^[3] user Gus defined the phrase," An expression used to delineate an experience as positive. Originating in the New Jersey region somewhere between 2003 and 2005, the phrase most often immediately follows a short description of an event or a product. While frequently used in conjunction with narrations of sexual events and acts, the phrase is flexible and can apply to nearly any situation." The post received more than 1,100 upvotes in less than 14 years (shown below).

Spread

The meme continued to spread throughout the 2000s and 2010s. On September 9th, 2008, Urban Dictionary^[4] user Oversiiiiiight defined "Paulie Carbone," who is widely speculated to be the real name of the man in the picture, by posting the copypasta.

The copypasta spread to other messageboards. For example, on July 28th, 2009, CheatEngine.org^[5] user HackOtaku posted the message (shown below, left).

Soon, variations of the meme, featuring images that resemble the original spread on 4chan. On November 23rd, 2010, for example, an anonymous user posted a version supposedly by a man named Frankie (shown below, right).^[6]

Others posted image edits of the scene and altered the text to match the image. These versions use the image to determine the style in which the copypasta is presented. For example, in 2010, FunnyJunk user ascian posted a variation with the Joseph Ducreau self-portrait, referencing the Archaic Rap meme (shown below).

Identity

The man in the image is reportedly named Paulie Carbone, who was killed in a car accident on July 10, 2007.^[1] A number of memorial videos were posted on YouTube to his memory, which have since been deleted.^[2] These videos were later the target of troll campagins.^[2]
