“So it begins” is an image macro series derived from Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, in which the character of Gandalf takes part in the Battle of Helm’s Deep. Though the series shows Gandalf as the source of the line “So it begins,” the king Theoden is its originator.
The images usually depict an activity, online or otherwise, of great gravity or perceived significance in an ominous or foreboding tone. In a similar fashion to “It begins,” the macro implies an observance of an event of humorously inflated consequence, and pokes fun at all parties involved.
The series first appeared on memegenerator.net early last year, and has made appearances on quickmeme.com and wired.com.
