Team Fortress 2 is “regularly” updated by Valve Software to add new content; maps, weapons, and in particular, hats and other miscellaneous items.
In recent months, many of these items have been given to one class, the Soldier. As Valve likes to hint towards new updates on their blogs and other online media, the community has a tendency to jokingly assume any new content hinted at will be for the Soldier.
After the Uber update, in which the Soldier received two new item packs (most classes got one, while Pyro got one weapon and Engineer nothing), many community members complained about favoritism on Valve Software’s part towards the Soldier. This led to any potential new update to be met with a cry of “Valve’ll give it to Soldier instead” or similar.
Shortly afterward, the Grocket update (mysterious rockets containing gear designed by Weta Studios – the movie studio who did the special effects for Lord of the Rings and many other high-profile movies) gave yet more items to the Soldier, adding further fuel to the fire. Despite the fact that bizzare technology is the Engineer’s role and the Righteous Bison (one of the new items) looked like a perfect fit for him, it was given to the Soldier. Now any hint of new things or blog posts about any class would meet “SOLDIER UPDATE CONFIRMED”, often in capital letters, large writing, and/or bold text.
