The Spanish Inquisition is a famous three-part sketch from the British comedy series “Monty Python’s Flying Circus.” Originally airing on September 22nd, 1970, the sketches consist of certain characters mentioning that they were not expecting a Spanish Inquisiton, after which there is an enormous musical sting, and three men in red suits (played by Michael Palin, Terry Jones, and Terry Gilliam) break in and shout their classic line “NOBODY expects the Spanish Inquisition!” As seen below:
The Unexpectedness of this sudden entrance (or lack thereof later on) made this sketch ripe for parody, resulting in YouTube videos and YTMND’s where the trio shows up unexpectedly and says their famous catchphrase. On YTMND, the common way to use this fad is to make a YTMND with an interesting title, and then cut to the unexpected turout, in a similar practice to the rickroll or the WTF bomb.
