Step Brothers Car Scene Parodies

Step Brothers Car Scene Parodies are a series of lip dub videos, all of which follow the general structure of a group of four lip-synching to a performance of "Sweet Child o' Mine" by Guns N' Roses from the 2008 film Step Brothers.

Origin

The song "Sweet Child o' Mine" was originally written and recorded by American rock band Guns N' Roses and released as the third single from their 1987 debut studio album Appetite for Destruction. Upon its single release in August 1988, the song topped the Billboard Hot 100 and became one of the band's most commercially successful songs.^[1]

The comedy film Step Brothers, starring Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly, was released on July 25, 2008.^[2] A scene in the film features the character Derek Huff (played by Adam Scott) and his family singing an acapella version of "Sweet Child o' Mine" during a car ride. The scene was uploaded to YouTube by user inkme1983 on October 25, 2008, and has since been viewed over 10,000,000 times as of June 2014.^[3]

Spread

Since the release of the film, multiple lip dubs and variations of the scene have been uploaded to YouTube, many of which have accumulated thousands of views. The first recorded lip dub of the scene was uploaded by YouTuber bayleigh818 on August 15, 2008 and has accumulated over 150,000 views as of October 2012.^[4] Popular Japanese-American YouTuber Ryan Higa uploaded a lip dub of the scene with altered lyrics (shown bottom right), which has accumulated over 3,000,000 views as of June 2014.

Besides the numerous YouTube remakes, the scene has gained online popularity through other means. Many Facebook groups dedicated to the scene have been created; the most liked of these has close to 1,700 likes.^[5] Requests for MP3 versions of "Sweet Child o' Mine" as performed in Step Brothers have been posted to Yahoo! Answers.^[6] Dozens of blogging sites have either highlighted the scene or posted their own variation of it.^[7]

Canadian pop singer Justin Bieber recorded an acoustic version of the Step Brothers version of the song in 2010.^[8] In August 2013, a lip dub of the scene was recorded by Craig Mitchell, Justin Blanchet, Sam Simmonds, Sam Blanchet and Dave Bargent, all players from the Exeter Chiefs rugby club, emerging as one of the more popular variations of the fad^[9] and being covered by several sports blogs, including USA Today's The Big Lead,^[10] NESN,^[11] and Yardbarker.^[12]
