So I was thinking about MLP today and I think I realized a huge problem I have with DHX or Hasbro or maybe just the writers: They seem really afraid to canonize anything. Like anything that people want to know. I remember how they danced around AJ’s parents being dead. Okay fair enough, death isn’t exactly something that should be discussed in a positive kids show like this.
Then there’s something like Equestria Girls. Throughout that entire film, never once is the word ‘human’ uttered. Then there’s Vinyl Scratches eyes, yeah we saw them in ACW. But that was literally for a frame, and this is a show that had infamous animation errors in the first season. And then there’s the matter of whether or not Pinkie is an Apple or not. Instead of giving us the obvious no and then getting on with the Aesop anyway, again; refuse to make a choice. I want to bring up Starswirl the Bearded or how exactly Luna transformed into NM, but there are good chances that those will be addressed.
I don’t know, maybe it’s just me.

Don’t forget that they refused to make a choice in regards to Scoots’ flight problem as well. And dragons… no one knows what’s going on with them anymore. Vagueness seems to be the theme of this season.

Oh yeah and the concept of Scootaloo having parents is still up in the air. I mean Jesus, are they really having a hard time deciding on whether or not to pander to the sadists that want Scootaloo to be a homeless orphan? This is another one of the situations that make me want to be backstage when they write up episodes. Just to hear exactly why they’re not addressing anything.
Feb 21, 2014 at 08:13PM EST in reply to Mzuark
Just want to point out that Vinyls eyes are 99% likely NOT to be an animation error.
Her eyes are canonically magenta and they look good on her. Enough with the denial already

It’s like my friend always tells me: they don’t wanna break from that precious status quo. ’Course, with Twilicorn being a huge elephant in the room, that ship has already sailed.

Now, a lot of collective bronies have had their collective jimmies collectively rustled from pinkie’s behavior in the recent episode………….collectively. So here I am going to play defense.
Insensitivity is Pinkie’s major negative trait, much like Twilight’s OCD and Applejack’s stubbornness. Her hyper activity caused her to speak before she could think out the words. She wasn’t trying to purposefully hurt Fluttershy, but she was only trying to compliment her and it came out wrong or may have she may have said too much, it’s apart of her character, as shown in a friend in deed when she showed no respect for Cranky’s personal bubble, over a barrel when she unintentionally started a stampede, and may the best pet win when she was talking about how they were going to invite rainbow for the pet play date, but remembered that she didn’t have a pet.
It’s not OOC for Pinkie to be insensitive, it’s just a negative character trait she has as a result of her ADD personality.
Feb 17, 2014 at 05:53AM EST in reply to grimmore
I did see someone make the point that the mane six have all been placed into most of the episodes of this season thus far, whether they need to be or not, meaning Pinkie has had more screentime this season to display those traits. But problems only seems to happen when Pinkie isn’t the focus of an episode. I think that future episodes about her wont have these problems like “Pinkie Pride”; it’s how she acts as a side character that people have issues with, although she’s yet to detract from a story she’s not part of and instead its just little comic relief gags that are rubbing fans the wrong way.
I would like to point out though that as over-the-top as Pinkie was in “Filli Vanilli”, she was still as concerned for Fluttershy as the rest of her friends towards the end even if she wasn’t able to express and word it properly so she wasn’t totally inconsiderate. AKR’s tweet that Pinkie had no filter in the episode, regardless of whether or not it excuses her behaviour in anyone’s eyes, also suggests the writers are aware of this on some level. I think that, at worst, it’s just a bit of a rough patch. It’s nothing too serious at the moment, and a lot of the time the show’s writer have proved that they can learn from their mistakes so I don’t see all doom and gloom ahead for Pinkie’s character.

Now I’ve watched the episode, the song of the ponytones (for some reason) reminds a lot to the old Nickelodeon’s bumpers from the 90’s:
Just think about it: Bam-Bam-BamBam Nic-kelo-deon.
Feb 16, 2014 at 12:48AM EST
I watched the first episode and now filled with a begrudging intrigue. It’s not like Barbie or the other girls shows but still I just can’t. I am so conflicted. :(
Feb 16, 2014 at 01:17AM EST in reply to Heyoceama
If you don’t really like the show then don’t try and force yourself to watch it, it is very much a niche kind of thing.
Feb 16, 2014 at 01:22AM EST in reply to supergoron
Its not so much that I don’t like it. It’s that its not within the realm that I tend to dedicate my time to. But at the same time I am left thinking “What am I not seeing that the other people are?”
Feb 16, 2014 at 03:20AM EST in reply to Heyoceama
The first few episodes are generally considered to be relatively dull. If you want a better understanding of why we like it, perhaps you should try one that many of us consider to be good , like ’It’s About Time’ or ‘Sleepless in Ponyville’.

The seasons 1 episodes didn’t do that much to hook me. The episode that really sucked me in was Luna Eclipsed in season 2

Try season 2, they borrowed a villain from Star Trek.

In a recent Comic Book Cast interview with Josh Keaton (voice of Spiderman, Hal Jordan, Ocelot ect.) he said that he and his wife loved MLP, especially the music and Discord, and he wishes he could someday do a voice over for the show. Just thought i’d point out that, yes Spidey is a brony. :D

What I took from this week’s episode:
Pony A Capella is a thing. Big Mac, Fluttershy and Rarity are some of the best singers in all of Equestria. Pinkie REALLY needs to work on keeping her mouth shut. Apparently, poison joke has the same effect every time it is applied. Big Mac is slowly becoming a more important part of the cast. I am going to be seeing a lot of three-ways between Rarity, Fluttershy and Mac.
The episode was really good, but I think Pinkie could have toned it down a bit. (Odd how she was being so brutal to the pony who shares her voice actor.)
Feb 15, 2014 at 04:54PM EST
I immediately connected with Fluttershy in this episode. I’ve also done things without realising others were watching or listening – not singing. but making a joke or putting on a funny voice for a moment or something like that which works just the same. I realise that nobody really sees any of it as a cause to make fun of me, far from it, but it can still be embarrassing even when it shouldn’t. I know EXACTLY how that feels! Amy Keating Rogers was spot on with a lot of emotions here. This is definitely the episode which I’ve related to the most. Aside from the fact that it was about singing, I could practically see myself in this episode :)
Feb 15, 2014 at 02:46PM EST
As soon as I saw the preview clip where Fluttershy’s friends are shocked to hear her sing, and she’s embarrassed that they did, I thought it was gonna sour the whole experience for me. I’m glad to say that it didn’t, but seriously, that plot device is so dumb. They’ve all sang many times before in front of each other and complete strangers (and please, don’t give me that “Rule of Musical” explanation again; I’m sick of it). That aside, I found nothing else offensive about this episode. I loved the callback to “Bridle Gossip”, I loved the song, and I loved the moral. This is why Amy Keating Rogers is my favorite writer; she just can’t write a bad episode. I never should’ve doubted her.
P.S. If they could stop shoehorning the entirety of the Mane Six into every episode and making Pinkie as obnoxious as possible (besides crawling on the wall like Spider-Man, which I thought was cool)… that’d be great.
Feb 21, 2014 at 09:31PM EST in reply to TheVoiceofSurvival91
I don’t know about that last part. On one hand, yeah it’s shoehorning if they’re only getting one line each. But on the other hand, every time one of them’s missing I just spend the whole episode wondering why,

Alright everyone, new episode tomorrow
written by Amy Keating Rogers
and judging from the previews, it’s going to be about stage freight.
get hyped everyone.
On a a side note, it comes out one day before the one year anniversary of Magical Mystery Cure, the episode that was suppose to destroy the brony fandom (even though it didn’t, and I though it was very good IMO), and a few weeks ago, there was the fighting is magic C&D, and a few days before that, the first equestria girls movie was announced, and a few days before that, Alicorn Twilight was announced, all of After much analysis, and after the announcement of EqG 2, i can come to a conclusion that February is the time of the month where news gets dropped and cause the collective jimmies of the collective brony community to get collectively rustled…….collectively.
With this knowledge, I decided to make a month-long holiday for the fandom, I call it…….
“Brony Fandom Frenzy February!”

Feb 14, 2014 at 07:13PM EST in reply to ARobotNamedJoe
Just because someone doesn’t like something doesn’t mean that they’re “butthurt” or crying. Yes, there are many, to put it lightly, “rash” people who are quick to judge things, but just keep in mind that not everyone is like that. I don’t like the first movie, and I don’t really have high hopes for this one, and that’s that.
Besides, it kinda makes you look like an elitist dick if you do it. No offense.
Feb 14, 2014 at 08:23PM EST in reply to DanGuy96
I know not everyone is like that, nor did I mean to imply it. This was simply me trying to taking a stab at the people who declare fandom ruination at the mere fact that EGG exists, not those who didn’t like it.

Feb 13, 2014 at 09:20PM EST
People, this was inevitable whenever we like it or not. Equestria Girls must have been a success for Hasbro to make a sequel. It’s what many companies do if they have a successful product on their hands, they try to make full potential of the property to make them their own money. It may not have been the best decision with the fans, but Hasbro won’t listen like always.
