Tac Nayn (pronounced “Tac-9”) is an 8-bit animation that serves as a reverse meme of Nyan Cat; the name is derived from “Nyan Cat” spelled in reverse order. Tac Nayn has a Belgian waffle body and a rainbow trail that is shades of gray.

On April 21st, 2011, sixteen days after the original “Nyan Cat” video was uploaded to YouTube, Cheezburger CEO Ben Huh conceived the idea for a reversed version of Nyan Cat and it was created by SenorGIF blogger[1] Frankie Crescioni.[8] Huh chose the name “Tac Nayn” for the black cat, who appears to be flying through a red background with floating skulls.

However, it was not the first Nyan Cat parody to use the backwards name: a video uploaded to YouTube the day before by AmazingPurpleCat[3] reversed the colors and rotation of the original but did not take off. The rivalry between Nyan Cat and Tac Nayn also draws parallel from the Longcat vs. Tacgnol mythology, which dates back to 2007.

Hours after the original GIF animation of Tac Nayn was posted, YouTuber Urijahuri[2] uploaded a video version featuring Crescioni’s cat set to a backmasked rendition of Nyanyanyanyanyanyanya.

Tac Nayn was featured several games including Nyan Cat: Lost in Space[4] and Tac Nayn: Demolition Nayn[5] and has a looped version available on Nyan.Cat.[7] There are also over 600 images tagged “Tac Nayn” on deviantArt.[6]
