The Mona Lisa is a painting created by Leonardo Da Vinci. It is well known as one of the most famous paintings of all time.
The Mona Lisa is reported to have started creation in 1503, and finished production in 1519. The portrait is that of Lisa Gherardini, wife of Francesco del Giocondo. The painting is thought to have been commissioned for their new home, and to celebrate the birth of their second son, Andrea.
The painting’s fame grew after it was stolen on 21 August 1911. The following day, Louis Béroud, a painter, walked into the Louvre and went to the Salon Carré where the Mona Lisa had been on display for five years, only to find it missing. It was later discovered that the painting was taken by Peruggia, an Italian patriot who believed Leonardo’s painting should be taken back to Italy for display in an Italian museum. The painting has since been kept under high alert.
