Totally Worth It

About

"Totally Worth It" is an expression used to abide by one's decision or action, usually in the face of undesirable results or consequences. Since being introduced through a rage comic character with the same name, the phrase has entered colloquial usage in similar vein to "I Regret Nothing.".

Origin

On May 10th, 2005, an episode of the medical comedy show Scrubs titled "My Changing Ways" first aired. The episode features the Janitor convincing his nemesis JD to eat a pie laced with laxatives by eating some himself. When they're both in the bathroom suffering from the effects of the laxatives he says the line "Totally worth it."

"Who would do this to themselves?"
"Totally worth it."

The phrase first appeared online on November 27th, 2007, as the titled of a comic posted by DeviantArt^[6] user wedgejaeger, which depicts a character from the video game Mass Effect shooting an unarmed man to stop an argument.

Spread

On May 10th, 2010, the Facebook^[3] page "Saying "Totally Worth It" After Or Before You Do Something Really Stupid" which encourages users to share the stupid stories they deemed "totally worth it" was created. On June 21st, 2010, satirical news site The Onion ^[2] published an article titled "'Totally Worth It,' Claims Grown Man Limping Off Softball Field." On September 28th, 2010, FunnyJunk^[7] user cbawesome uploaded a comic depicting a man who was willing to have sex with a pedophile for a free XBox with the added caption "Sex and a free Xbox. Totally worth it." As of March 2014, the picture has over 1,400 views.

On August 7th, 2012, humor site Smosh^[4] published a comic by Adam Watson titled "That Joke Was Totally Worth It!" which depicted two scientists blinding a co-worker to set up a bad joke. On August 10th, Funny or Die published an animated version of the comic.

Usage in Rage Comics

In rage comics, "totally worth it" has become a popular conclusion to comics that involve a narrative in which a husband or boyfriend insults his wife or girlfriend (normally portrayed as Derpina). "Totally worth it" normally captions a picture of the husband or boyfriend injured or homeless, indicating his current state was totally worth making the insulting joke at the expense of his significant other.
