About
Translator San (a.k.a “He Just Doesn’t Give a Fuck”) refers to Japanese-English interpreter Takayuki Nushida who became the subject of an exploitable photoshop meme after translating at an E3 event using a pen and notepad.
Origin
During Sony’s press conference at E3 2009, Kazunouri Yamauchi (creator/producer of GT series) gave a presentation for an upcoming Gran Turismo PSP game. Yamauchi was accompanied by an interpreter that opted to read his hand-written translations off a notepad. While his diligent note-taking was most likely used a measure to ensure accuracy, it was joked that he was too engrossed in his notepad to give his full attention to Yamauchi.
Spread
An archived 4chan thread from June 3rd, 2009 shows users participating in the photoshop meme.[1] The same day a YouTube video of the presentation titled “He Just Doesn’t Give a Fuck” was uploaded, and has received over 100,000 views as of June 2011. There are photoshopped pictures of the GT5 translator began to surface across sites like Neogaf[1], Kotaku[2], the IGN boards[3], Game Trailer Forums[4], and the Japanese blog Hatimaki.[5]
Search
Search queries spiked in June of 2009, immediately after the E3 event, and dramatically fell off until June the following year around the same time as E3 2010.
