About
Who’s that Pokemon is a popular variety of YouTube Poop videos where a segment from the Pokemon cartoon is altered to either feature other characters or memes, and/or portray editing styles synonymous with the YouTube Poop style.
Origin
Who’s that Pokemon is an eyecatch segment used in between commercial breaks during the broadcast of popular Japanese anime series Pokemon. Before transiting into comemercial break, each Pokemon pop quiz challanges viewers to identify one of the hundreds of fictional Pokemon creatures shadowed in dark silhouette. After the break, the answer is revealed.
On September 22, 2007, YouTube user gameboy659 uploaded a video of himself watching the Pokemon cartoon.
This video is revered as the basis for other Who’s That Pokemon works within the YouTube Poop sphere despite the lack of any edits or miscellaneous post production effects. The sound clip of expressed frustration is also commonly used in this series.
The date of upload prevents YouTube Insight from revealing where the video was first linked from but research suggests that MySpace, the GameFAQ forums, and numerous Pokemon forums may have spurred the spread.
It is worth noting that Who’s That Pokemon was used in a series of YTMNDs starting in mid-2004 but never quite took off like the YouTube video.
Insight
Five months after the initial video posting is when searches started to materialize. Despite the phrase being repeated on the cartoon for almost a full decade prior, there are no searches listed on Insight prior to the video posting.
YouTube Poop Derivatives
Who’s That Pokemon has evolved into a popular exploitable amond YouTube Poop creators, often substituting Pokemon creatures with other non-Pokemon characters and/or other memes for comical effect.
