The Wilhelm scream is a short sound bite, which has been recycled by developers since the 1950’s.
It started when it was used as a sound effect in 1951 for the film Distant Drums.
It has been used in Star wars (many times) along with many other games, movies and tv series.
The sound effect has become allmost cliche’ and (according to wikipedia) has been used in over 140 films.
