Wrong Number Rita features the image of a teenage girl holding an orange to her face, resembling the way a person would answer the phone. She has a dumbfounded look on her face, appearing as though she is unsure of what is going on. Most captions of this image have to do with Rita asking dumb questions about phones and technology.

Origin

On November 12, 2012 an image featuring "Wrong Number Rita" was posted to Reddit through Imgur by Redditor CharlyRowson^[1]. The original image received only 5 upvotes and 5 downvotes. The image was captioned on Imgflip^[2] before being uploaded to Imgur and read "I Think You Have / The Wrong Number"^[3].

Spread

After the original Imgflip post, the image spread to many meme sharing websites, such as Zipmeme^[4], WeKnowMemes^[5], MemePix^[6], MemesHappen^[7], etc. As well as appearing on photo sharing sites, such as FunnyJunk^[8] and Flickr^[9] and being featured on the "Advice-Animal" Tumblr page^[10]. The popularity of Wrong Number Rita has continued to grow through websites such as these, particularly WeKnowMemes. The original caption format usually had to do with "Rita" calling the wrong number, or being called at a wrong number^[11][12]. For the most part, the caption trend had morphed, now featuring "Rita" calling to ask retailers stupid questions, most commonly about technology^[13][14].
