Zalgo is a Internet legend that is associated with insanity, death and destruction of the world, similar to the creature Cthulhu created by H.P. Lovecraft in the 1920s. Zalgo is often associated with scrambled text on webpages and images of people whose eyes and mouth covered in black.

Origin

On July 27th, 2004, SomethingAwful Goon Shmorky uploaded several modified versions of syndicated comic series like Nancy and _Archie to his personal website.^[1] The word “Zalgo” appears in the 3rd comic in the series, a Nancy parody, and the 11th in the series, an Archie parody:

On August 22nd, 2009, Shmorky explained the origin of Zalgo in a post on the SomethingAwful Forums^[2]:

I like how people who try to figure out the origin of the “meme” don’t even know where it came from originally. I’ll tell you where it came from. From me. I just made it up. Zalgo is something horrible. Zalgo is something that’s coming. It’s coming soon. It has nothing to do with Lovecraft. I’m not nerdy enough to make those kind of references.

Seeing it become a meme kinda killed doing further Zalgo edits in the future (for me anyway) but maybe I’ll do one when you least expect it.

On December 2nd, 2008, the blog Grim Reviews^[5] posted a series of comics titled “The Zalgo Comic Chronicles.” The first Urban Dictionary^[6] definition was submitted on Feburiary 15th, 2009.

The earliest archived 4chan thread is from March 21st, 2009 and featured a Zalgo-style Calvin and Hobbes image. The first Reddit^[15] thread mentioning Zalgo was posted on April 6th, 2009 and linked to the Grim Reviews article. A TV Tropes^[7] page was created on August 26th, 2010. A Chatroulette screenshot featuring a Zalgo version of Boxxy reached the front page of the r/pics subreddit on December 25th, 2010 and accumulated 446 up votes before being archived. Zalgo references can be found on various other websites including the Creepypasta Wiki^[8], Tumblr^[9] and deviantArt.^[10] A Facebook^[11] fan page has 4,257 likes as of October 31st, 2011.

Although the Zalgo comic was relatively well-known on SomethingAwful, search traffic for Zalgo did not peak until March of 2009 when it began being posted to 4chan.
