The atomic bomb was a scare tactic designed to force the otherwise-intractable Japanese into surrendering. The only other option was a land invasion, which, between Japanese and US casualties, would have easily doubled the total kill count of ALL of World War 2
And do I really need to say anything about 9/11? Al Qaeda saw it as divinely-inspired vengeance, everyone else saw it as standard, run-of-the-mill terrorism (because it was, just much bigger than usual)
