Anthropology is the study of human cultures through time, so finding relics from past civilizations is important.
The idea of the comic, and the picture above, is that ponies seem to not realize how ill-suited that most of their tools and objects are to their physical capabilities.
It's just one of the funny little remnants of the cartoon design process.
The writers wanted a bowling alley scene.
The bowling balls have the traditional finger holes so that the audience (of humans) identifies them as bowling balls despite the fact that real sentient ponies would never bother drilling holes that they couldn't use.
