Celestia was absent for the most of the two-parter, true, but there was no indication that she was captured by Nightmare Moon. Plus, she was able to show up by all herself after Nightmare Moon was defeated (i.e. didn’t need rescuing).

That would imply a plan on Celestia’s part, to stay out of the events that transpired that night and let the Elements of Harmony (Mane Six) do the work for here.

In other words…

Just as planned.
