I don't know why no one sees this coming. I had her pegged as future alicorn since season 1, as have many others. I mean, its pretty obvious. The name Twilight, being between night and day, or the melding of the two, the presence of a heavenly body as her cutie mark, just like Celestia and Luna, and the fact she is so darn magical, the best magic user of Ponyville so far.

I'd be more surprised if she DIDN'T become an alicorn. The only alicorn that did not make sense was Cadence, but we all know it was so she could replace Pink Celestia so we fans could have a White Celestia.
