Well… there goes that theory that she’s Twilight’s alter ego…

But Mr. Scratch is right. Non-standard character design, non-standard cutie mark, old student of Princess Celestia, and there’s a subspecies imbalance among the main six that she would fix. This just SCREAMS new main character.
