So the walls not only go upwards, but under the ground and outwards too? Titans can't exist underground, since they require sunlight to function, so the purpose of that is obviously not to protect humanity from anything under the ground. More likely, it is to prevent them from going underground where they can escape from the titans. Which means the walls aren't to protect humanity, only to put them in a cage.
