Black and White take place in parallel universes of each other. The reflection here is the result of a temporal-spacial rift in the space-time continuum, allowing the viewing into said alternate universe(s). In other words:

Red is parallel to Blue
Gold to Silver
Ruby to Sapphire
Diamond to Pearl
X to Y

Crystal, Emerald, and Platinum are the result of the two Universes leaking into one another.
