Then there are cases where piracy has benefited the franchise it's "hurting." Game of Thrones is a perfect example of this. Despite it only being on HBO, a channel not many people have, Game of Thrones has a huge fandom that watches the show through illegitimate sources. Then because they didn't waste their money to get HBO for the one show they liked, those fans are then able to buy merchandise like DVD box sets, t-shirts, or $30,000 life size replica Iron Thrones. So then people are still making tones of money because the show is reaching more viewers that then go out and buy more merchandise.
