To me, Kill La Kill is a reconstruction of the magical girl genre. Madoka took all the lighthearted fun out of being a magical girl and made it a super serious, do-or-die experience. Kill La Kill acknowledges the extreme pressure put on kids who suddenly have to save the world, but still show that people are able to be happy and have fun and not get sucked into a vortex of depression while doing so. Which is just how Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann responded to Neon Genesis Evangelion.
TL:DR: It ain’t all fun and games, but it sometimes is. Accept some darkness, but also accept some light. That’s what makes it reconstruct rather than deconstruct.
Also, WhipperSnapper, it’s not a tight fit (No pun intended.) but Kill La Kill definitely counts as a magical girl show. It’s got transformation scenes. Lesbian (sub)text. Was originally going to be a monster-of-the-week style show. But it’s Trigainax. It’s not going to fall squarely into a nice, little category.
