I think the guy who drew it should watch the Internet Aristocrat, he explains exactly the problem with these people: Hypocrites at the highest level.
Since I'm french, I'll talk about a similar case that goes back to the "Renaissance", and more precisely about "Molière" (the french equivalent of Shakespeare to keep things simple).
Molière was well known in the king's family (Louis XIV at this time), and he was even a friend.
But Molière decided to write an act about the fake christians and hypocrites that started to get the king's attention. He wrote about other ridiculous and stupid behaviour he watched in the aristocraty and wrote play about it, so this was not a new thing.
It was in 1664 that the first version of "Le Tartuffe ou L'Imposteur" (the word/name Tartuffe became associated with this kind of hypocritical assholes) was played, but he had to rewrite it after the king recieved pressures from the groups that felt attacked (or should I say "triggered" in this case ?).
Molière tried to show the king that these guys were hypocrites if they felt threatened by it, even if it was kinda light mooded (Louis XIV himself loved this play).
