@Doc, I think “Break Out in Song” entry could easily include both dance & singing. It’d be also interesting to cover its use as a marketing campaign (like the T-mobile flashmob dance).
I’d like to start new initiative to expand our Flashmob-related entries in the database. The concept spans wide and runs deep in the web culture, whether it’s manifested in real life or online. As Yatta brought up earlier this week (thread), with more and more impromptu online events gaining recognition as part of flashmob culture, I think it’d be interesting to go back in timeline and document the notables. Right now we have some entries on: Flashmob main entry:...
here are my pokemons, let me show them to you: Wailord + Slowpoke Clefaire + Slowpoke Altaria + Slowpoke Torterra + Slowpoke
Yeah, I think we have enough empirical examples (entries on flashmob events) to recognize it as a recurring concept, treat as a parent/intro entry to individual event entries.
“But doesn’t “fair” really denote a level playing field?” Yes. There will be no such thing as editorial censorship strictly based on taste. We’ll make improvements to how trending topics works very soon. In the meantime, enjoy some non-Ponies for couple of days? not gonna lie, i lol’d at the sad keanu image..
OH NO PONICIDE!!! @ar098, MLP images are currently being blocked from showing up on Trending Photos box. For more info, there’s this thread going on.
@Platus, Yes, MLP image uploads are currently filtered from showing up on Trending Photos. As for the more permanent solution, we’ve been discussing similar options along the line of suggestions posted here (ex: handicap, max # of photos per meme, point system). Using a dynamic point-based system would be most fair and a big WIN, though I’m not sure how soon we can implement it. Setting a cap on # of images per meme could be a short-term remedy. Thanks for the suggestion, more to come.
I’d say this is more of a shoutout than advertising, considering Jamie’s involvement with KYMdb (he built it!). IMHO, the thing kinda advertises itself. :D
Reverse image search definitely helps, especially when it is an image that’s been iterated into different languages. Google Images also has a feature that allows users to see “similar images” or “more sizes” that will help isolating the original instance. If you’ve already identified the keywords and appx. time period associated with the image, you can also narrow down the Google search results by using “Custom Range” (ex: 1/1/2009 – 12/31/2009) on the sidebar. Great thread is great.
I ended up on the website for the first time through Boxxy episode in early 2009. After watching Xzibit Yo Dawg and Single Serving Sites episodes, I signed up for a KYM account My first entry submission was Playing Dead!
@Tomberry, Know Your Meme is no longer affiliated with Rocktboom, but I agree it’s a great intro to Nyan Cat. Kudos to Molly for excellent meme reportage! We’re working on rebooting KYM episodes, more updates to come.
We had a good talk on how to improve forum moderation last night. We’ll be addressing these issues more aggressively (soon). For now, I updated KNOW YOUR MEME: RULES thread and they will be more visible when posting a new thread or reply. Original rules thread here: http://knowyourmeme.com/forums/general/topics/3938-know-your-meme-rules

lol, did he say it with an Australian accent? As for the possible linkage between Lying Down Game and Planking, Paul Carran (the NZ guy being credited as the original planker) has said in news interviews that “lying down game” was the source of inspiration for planking: Q: How did it start? A: I got put on to a game called “the lying down game” by a friend in the United Kingdom. Me and a friend of mine, Justin Kemp, thought we would take it to the extreme and kick it off down our part of the world...
Here’s KYMdb – Planking.
