Just to be clear (and I know I'm being anal about terminology here) but the term you should use here is "variations" and not "instances." A variation is made up of many instances of the same type. An instance is an individual occurence.

Redspear, you're aware that we can't confirm this until we have more info about the origin, right? Don't just say Confirm because you like it. Say confirm if you believe that what has been covered does an accurate job of telling the story behind the meme. This entry does not do that yet.

Copypasta is a term that comes from 4chan. 4chan's /x/ board is the paranormal board. Google search "Creepypasta site:4chanarchive.org" The results are almost entirely from /x/ http://www.google.com/search?ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&q=creepypasta.com+site%3A4chanarchive.org A better question is, is creepypasta a term relevent to anyone outside of /x/?

A good place to start would be if you could find the earliest Bob Ross photoshopping contests you can find on Fark, and then look into any other possible places where one of these might have occurred. Provide links to these threads.

I don't think the question to ask is "why did it become popular again in 2007?" 2007 was a big year for lolcats and image macros in general. I think it's only natural that a well-known video-game reference like this would become popular because the phrase is already universally-recognizable.
