Buzzkilling

About

Although the term Buzzkill predates popular usage of the internet, the present tense verb Buzzkilling today is largely associated with a 4chan meme that places more value on the comedic subtletly of straight-forward explanations of what is out of place in an image. In short, it is a form of anti-joke.

Origin

Although Put Yourself in My Shoes never caught on with 4chan, the “Those are my shoes. You are a dog” inspired the creation of other, simpler image macros utilizing the same anti-joke format.

ED offers some commentary on the subject:

The fact that one iteration of a five year old meme has become a meme in itself says something about the need for Original Content.

Pics or It Didn't Happen

About

“Pics or it didn’t happen” is a popular phrase used in response to a person who has made an unbelievable or outlandish claim, common on many forums around the Internet, including Digg, Reddit, MetaFilter, Fark, 4chan, SomethingAwful, and more.

A Google search for the phrase returns over 8,000,000 results, although it has been used in only a few image macros, usually pertaining to the Bible.

Orgin

It’s difficult to say exactly where “Pics or it didn’t happen” first originated, but one of the earliest instances is from MetaFilter.

On April 23rd, 2004, ptrin used POIDH in a thread on MetaFilter in a thread entitled Just Say No to Crack

On March 28th, 2006, The Patriarch created the first Urban Dictionary entry for “Pics or it didn’t happen.”

A phrase used on Internet forums to counter the vast range of unverifiable claims made by users. Often these claims involve personal brag-worthy accomplishments, extraordinary or rare sights/occurrences, and tales relating to alcohol or drug use.
Guy 1: Dude, I drank four bottles of bourbon last night, then hooked up with 4 chicks at the same time, then Donald Trump came to my house and gave me a million dollars!
Bearsharktopus

Origin

On September 17th, 2009, Reddit user CtrlAltDelYourFace created a thread entitled “Hey Reddit, I heard you like bears and sharks, so I made you a Bear Shark. Enjoy.”

User mintyice created Bear Shark Moon

CtrlAltDelYourFace returned with BEARSHARKTOPUS

And other users created instances such s Sharkwhaltopusbear, Gentlesharkwhaltopusbear, and more.

Spread

Within mere hours, Bearsharktopus made it to the popular Tumblog The Daily What.

Days after the Reddit thread, Buzzfeed contributer Mark Mann posted Bearsharktopus to Buzzfeed where it earned the “most shared”, “LOL”, and “omg” badges.

On September 20th, the Bearshark instance sans tenticles was featured on CollegeHumor.com.

The same day, Abe of the hilarious Christian conservative blog Christwire.org featured the Sharkbeartopus with the headline Crazed Evolutionists Create Bearsharktopus.

Excerpt:

This is more proof why genetics is evil! Somehow scientists are planning to,.. splice the genomes of a the bear, a shark and an immoral Asian octopus to evolve these sea monsters against holiness!
{snip}
Stop genetics! It is an abomination to science and nature, and only serves the aggrandizing, selfish agenda of dog evolutionists like Richard Dawson. These men have no morals or scruples, and don’t know what they are dealing with in their effort to play master and creator! Burn the lab experiments and gene manipulation!

Check out the sensational lack of Photoshop knowledge here!

On September 22nd, 2009, Boingboing’s Cory Doctorow posted Bearsharktopus under the title Beware the Bearsharktopus.

On October 5th, 2009, the breeding of a Bearsharktopus was depicted by jmay #559 on the site scribbls.com.

Then, on October 13th, something funny happened.

GQ’s Dan Fierman posted Bearsharktopus on GQ’s “The Verge” pop culture blog in a post entitled Know Your Meme. Ironically, we hadn’t created an entry on this meme yet.

Other Bearsharks

Within the Reddit thread, many users cited references to earlier bear-shark hybrids, such as this bearshark comic from Nerdoid.com published in July of 2009.

Merchandise

The original author of the Bearsharktopus image has created T-shirts available for purchase on Bearsharktopus.com.

Put Yourself in My Shoes

About

“Put Yourself in My Shoes” is a meme consisting of parodies of a safety notice from the United States Postal Service. Most of the derivatives were created within a few days in 2004 on SomethingAwful.com but the images went viral all over the web.

Origin

On May 20th, 2004, a Something Awful goon named Djarum posted the following message:

So yesterday I walk downstairs to get my mail, along with the tons of free magazines and bills I get this.

Since when has the Postal Serivce been sending out such great little safety notices?

Well of course the first thing that I thought of was to post it on here for everyone to partake in the fun.

I start it when my first horrible attempt.

Hopefully someone can do justice to it.

UPDATE

eaglebtc was kind enough to help everyone out with the whole process. Here’s what he told me:

quote:

I’ve got a multi-layer PSD and a RAR with all the fonts for the HelveticaNeue family. They are in OpenType format, which means anyone using Windows 2000 or XP can read them. Or they can download a free font reader.
Contributors should grab the following archive:
http://www.promotionsfd.com/test/usps-goldmine.rar
It contains the layer-separated PSD template, plus the USPS logo (EPS, with emblem reversed) and the font pack necessary for the text.
The PSD template has all layers separated by component: gray box, outline, dog & man, text, top box, etc. Its current size is 1600×1000, approximately. Becuase I made it larger, I redrew the “vector” objects so they would look better at this higher output resolution (150dpi). The text layers are in place, with the correct font selected. The user must have the fonts installed before they open the PSD or they will receive a warning.

Hope it helps!

In the next ten pages, hundreds of derivatives were created. It soon became a contest.
Results were archived on May 24th and May 31st, 2004.

Those Are My Shoes

Of all of the diverse instances of this meme, the “Those are my shoes Give them back You are a dog” instance became the most popular of all.

On 4Chan

The “Put Yourself in My Shoes” meme never really caught on with 4chan, but “Those are my shoes. Give Them Back. You are a dog” spawned an anti-joke meme that is referred to on ED simply as Buzzkilling.

Happy Cat is of the British Shorthair variety.

Origin: Conflicting Information

According to ED, the Happy Cat meme started when it was posted to the Something Awful forums in 2003, by user FancyCat.

There is no record of a goon named FancyCat on SomethingAwful. However there is a “Fancy Cat” (two words) who has been a registered user since 2002, but his post history is incomplete. (viewing is limited to SA Premium Membership. Cost: $30.00 ($10.00 membership, $10.00 archive access, $10.00 access to Premium features.)

According to the YTMND Wiki, Happy Cat was found by a Something Awful goon, also named Happy Cat.

[this will be investigated]

One of the earliest verifiable appearances of Happy Cat on Something Awful occured on May 12th, 2004 in an article entitled The Grocery Gauntlet written by Reid “Frolixo” Paskiewicz.

But, the earliest known sighting of Happy Cat on the web, actually comes from a a Russian catfood company, also called Happy Cat. Although the cat was not the primary mascot for the company, it did appear on the website as early as 2003.

Pfffffffffffff…

In 2002, Belgian teen Jelle Buelens, AKA Gellieman, recorded a video of himself singing a cover of the song Aïcha, originally written by French singer-songwriter Jean-Jacques Goldman, popularized by Algerian Raï artist Khaled and first translated into English by the Danish group Outlandish.

View the Khaled version

View the Outlandish version

Gellieman uploaded his video to his personal (now defunct) website jellebuelens.nl.nu, as a downloadable WMV file. It went largely un-noticed until December of 2003.

She Moves How???

Early on, Gellieman’s video was re-posted to various European websites. On December 9th, 2003, the video was renamed OMFG.WMV on the Finnish surfnet.fi site.

By December 11th, 2003, Gellieman’s video was posted to AlbinoBlacksheep. Only five days later, Aicha was entered into Urbandictionary.com.

The video grew in popularity across many countries. In Italy, Gellieman was heralded as the next big Internet Star after The Star Wars Kid and Little Fatty.
Excerpt from Italian site Mabega.net, Google Translated:

after the unforgettable Star Wars Kid, after the missed Fat Kid, now all the spotlight will be on the young Gellieman, author of a sensational cover of Aisha (Khaled old hits). Potete vederla qui (in formato Windows Media). You can see it here (Windows Media). Il video, manco a dirlo, è stato già rimontato con un più degno finale, che potete scaricare da qui . The video, needless to say, has already been replaced with a more worthy end, which you can download from here.

Although the link for the “more worthy end” has died long ago, it is evidence that the video was already being remixed.

Excerpt from Italian site Macchianera.net

This is GellieMan, live from his bedroom, popstar who has succeeded in stealing the stage of the Web to the likes of “Star Wars Kid” and “Famous Fat Boy”.

By 2004, a Gellieman FAQ was created on an Angelfire account.

On July 7th, 2004, a re-post of Gellieman’s video (again named OMFG.WMV) was posted to the Epicgames.com forums, along with a link of a remake by another user. Unfortunately, the link is dead.

In early 2005, Gellieman shut down his website. A rumor that Gellieman had killed himself just following the filming of the video circulated through Ebaumsworld, although this was false since Gellieman maintained his website for three years following the creation of the video.

A typical Ebaums Gellieman suicide rumormill thread.

Later that year, Youtube took off as the premeiere video-sharing platform, and many previously-filmed Gellieman remakes were uploaded to Youtube. In addition, the meme found a new audience, and new Gellieman remakes were made.

Duckroll

About

Duckroll is the father of all Rolls, and the predecessor to the Rick Roll.

According to Wikipedia the Duckroll originated in 2005 when moot created a word filter that changed the word “egg” to “duck.”

Fox News supports this theory in an article about the origin of the Rickroll published on April 22nd, 2008 entitled The Biggest Little Internet Hoax on Wheels Hits the Mainstream.

In keeping with silly Internet humor, the director of the image-sharing Web site 4chan, who goes by the handle “moot,” decided he’d play a joke and change the word “egg” to “duck” every time a user posted a message.

In time the phenomenon spread, and the word “eggroll” was replaced by “duckroll.” When someone came up with the idea to redirect Internet links to an image of a duck on wheels, rickrolling’s forebear, “duckrolling,” was born.

On January 4th, 2007, Sweetpipe added the first definition for Duckroll to UrbanDictionary.com

When you get a picture of a duck on wheels, instead of what you expected to get. Often used on image boards such as 4chan.
By following a link that promises an upskirt picture of Britney Spears, you get a picture of a duck on wheels, with the text “DUCKROLL” written on it.

EncyclopediaDramatica defines Duckroll like this:

Unlike Rickroll, duckroll is original and funny. It is made of pwn and win. To “duckroll” is to intentionally misdirect people on a chan imageboard to a different thread containing a picture of a duck with wheels, or of an animated gif of a toy duck rolling across the screen. The overall intent is to piss everyone off via deception.

The Lurkmore Wiki claims that Duckroll originated in mid-November 2006.

Duckroll first appeared in /b/ in mid-November 2006, where to many people’s surprise, Duckroll took off and became very successful because /b/ took much glee in duckrolling each other.

Only a handful of YTMND’s exist. The first was created by Gregunit on January 25, 2007.

More:

Duckrolled

Duckrolling Returns!

Duckroll and Bounce

David After Dentist

About

On January 30th, 2009, Youtube user booba1234 posted the video David After Dentist. The video stars the user’s son David, just after having oral surgery to remove an extra tooth during the summer of 2008.

According to Booba1234, David was very nervous about the surgery and so his father decided to videotape a before-and-after to make him feel better. Following the surgery, young David was high as a kite, and the rest… is history.

Within just a week of its posting, David After Dentist racked up over five million views, numerous remixes, and many, many reposts of the original. At the time it was one of the fastest-growing viral videos to date (not adjusted for internet inflation)

Your Argument is Invalid

About

The phrase “your argument is invalid” is often employed in debates of logic, and altough it predates the internet, many an internet know-it-all has used the phrase in chat, email, and on message boards.

Here is a rather passionate exchange between a Windows user and a Linux user in 2001:

> Nice ad hominem attack, David. Attack the messenger. Good boy.

That’s not what I understood ‘ad hominem’ to mean. My understanding was that
ad hominem involved an attack on the person making the argument, followed by
an obviously false assertion that such attack renders the person’s arguments
invalid, even though the details of the attack made are completely unrelated
to the matter being discussed.

Thus observing that you sent your mail using a Windows MUA, then declaring
that your argument is invalid because you’re a Windows user and therefore
obviously mentally deficient, would be an ad hominem attack.

Nicolas Cage’s Hair is a Bird

The now famous picture of Nicolas Cage’s hair photoshopped into a bird is rumored to have originated on 4Chan, although no archived thread exists to confirm this. This image macro places the clear insistance of logic on top of an image with a rather high WTF quotient.

On May 19th, My Hair is a Bird made the front page of Digg.com

Yourargumentisinvalid.com was registered to Jeffrey Spies on May 22nd, 2008

The meme draws certain parallels to Pancake Bunny.

Ceiling Cat

About

Ceiling Cat is part of the larger Caturday history, Catnarok mythology, nemesis of Basement Cat, and progenitor of Basement Horse.

Origin

The Ceiling Cat meme is believed to have originated in 2006 with the now famous picture of an orange cat, peering through a hole in the ceiling, with the caption “Ceiling Cat is watching you masturbate.”

Many variants of this image appeared on /b/, using the “cat in a hole” exploitable in a number of ways. One notable variant is the “Where Is Your God Now” image macro, in which Ceiling Cat is shopped in a manner making it appear as though Ceiling Cat is peering through a hole in the sky.

On Y.T.M.N.D.

On February 8th, 2006, user track11 posted the first instance of Ceiling Cat to appear on YTMND.

Ceiling Cat…

Most instances of Ceiling Cat on YTMND were produced during 2006, but there have been a few instances of Ceiling Cat appearing on YTMND for each subsequent year.

More YTMNDs

Exploring the Myths

Building upon this theme of Ceiling Cat as God, the Ceiling Cat meme spawned a few different religiously-themed mythologies:

Catnarok on Encylopedia Dramatica These have a very distinct canon.

The Lolcat Bible Also has a distinct canon.

Various apocryphal narratives that borrow from both of the previous, and fromIcanHasCheezburger

Catnarok

The current telling of the Catnarok prophecy as of August 14th, 2009, according to Encyclopedia Dramatica

Ceiling cat will warn Anonymous that Catnarok is nigh. It will be the meow of doom. The Internet Hate Machine will begin to operate at maximum force. Limecat will not be amused. Happy Snake will be happy. The pool will be closed. Raptor Jesus will go extinct. Auschwitz will be fired up again. Gay porn will be posted on every MySpace page. All iPods will be stolen. Curtains will be drawn. LOL will be corrupted. No dogs will be left to buy. All furfags will be yiffing in hell. Lazers will be charged to previously unknown levels.
It will be the Day of Reckoning.

While it is never spelled out exactly, the images depict the war between Longcat and Tacgnol clearly represent light and dark. Furthermore, the rest of the text on ED eludes to a timeless nature of the fight, being the ever present balance, as a representaton of the yin and yang of Chinese philosophy.

An Epic Google Insights Graph

There are some truly remarkable things happening in this graph. Queries for Longcat preceed queries for Ceiling Cat; beginning in August of 2005. Another six months passes before Ceiling Cat queries begin. We can interpret this to mean that people began to hear of Longcat well before knowing of Ceiling Cat. Over one year passed with both of these memes queries being mostly unrelated.

Tacgnol queries first appear in March of 2007. During this month Google search traffic for Longcat and Ceiling Cat were about equal. By June of 2007, the trends for Ceiling Cat and Longcat begin to exhibit clear correlations in activity.

August 2007: Catnarok is documented on ED.

By November of 2007, we begin to see search queries for Catnarok.

February 2008: Ceiling Cat and Longcat show an increase in activity.

Change of Power
April 2008: Ceiling Cat reaches its pinnacle popularity, just as search queries for Basement Cat appear. Simultaneously, Catnarok has peaked. Ceilingcat, Longcat, and Tacgnol all begin to decrease in traffic by May.

These relationships can be interpeted as this: Longcat is the avatar for Ceiling Cat, acting in his service. Tacgnol, may have been an avatar of Basement Cat, but Basement Cat was the only one to benefit from the April 2008 Catnarok peak.

By June of 2008, all five trends exhibit a very strong correlation.

The Lolcat Bible

Written about in the LA Times, The Lolcat Bible is a Wiki translation of the Christian Bible directly adapted to be relevent to cats, verse for verse.

“Oh hai. In teh beginnin Ceiling Cat maded teh skiez An da Urfs, but he did not eated dem. Da Urfs no had shapez An haded dark face, An Ceiling Cat rode invisible bike over teh waterz.”

The beliefs represented by the Lolcat Bible clearly conflict with Catnarok.
The name Longcat does not appear anywhere in The Lolcat Bible, nor does Armageddon.

Matthew 1:18

18 Now, teh burth of teh Christ was liek dis: After Marry and Joseph waz all “We’s gonna get marrieded, kthnx”, but befoor dey cood hav hankiez pankiez Mary was all preggarz from Teh Ceiling Cat.19 Joseph was liek “I has virjn – NOOOO dey be stealin my virjn! Must hied hur”.20 But when he was tihnkin, zomg, a BirdCat frm Ceiling Cat was liek, “Oh hai! Iz in ur dreemz, givin u messij. Don be scairdy cat. Taek Mary as ur wife – is virjn. But teh Forse is strong in tihs wun, lol! HovrCat is on hur, givn hur babby, srsly.” So Joseph was liek " Oh yey. Iz gonna luv him and squeez him and call him George."21 But BirdCat was liek “No, you gonna call him bahbeh Jeebus. cuz he save kittehs frum bein bad kittehs. Kthxbai.”22 So all dis was all did cuz Ceiling Cat had sed it wud be. Him proffit was all liek:23 “Hay guise, luk! teh virjn is all preggers, and dey gonna call him A-manual”, dat be joospeek for “Ceiling Cat wit us”24 Then Joseph walked up, dun wat teh BirdCat frm Ceiling Cat tolded him too, and was all liek “U wit me now lol” at Mary.25 And dey didnt has Hankiez Pankiez til affer dey gets a son and calleded him Jeebus. Kthnx.

Names mentioned pertaining to the Christ Kitten in this passage are Jeebus, and A-manual. Jeebus is written about in many various ways, and is written about on Urban Dictionary.com It’s not entirely clear if Ceiling Cat’s son was the human known as Jebus or perhaps a cat known as Jebus.

By Mark 1:9 the Christ Kitteh is referred to as Happy Cat.

9 So Happy Cat, he come to John like John sez. John dunkxz Happy Cat with waterz.10 Ceiling Cat sends Hovr Cat.11 Ceiling Cat sez “This mai Kitteh. He roxxors an I’ze happy.”12 Thn teh Hovr Cat sends him 2 wild.13 An he was in wilderness long tyme (srsly, 40 dais!). An Basement Cat wuz showin’ lotza evilz cheezburgrz an catnipz to him. An he wuz wit teh sqirrelz, an anjelz wer giving him srsly betur cheezburgrz an brayded hiz fur.

Happy Cat, is of course, the famous face of IcanHasCheezburger.com.

Image Macro Narratives

Supreme Deity of Lolspeak

Most of these Image Macro Narratives consist primarily of images from IcanHazCheezburger, with a few 4Chan shown in succession to create their own interpretations. Many often cite the Lolcat Bible, and some even make attempts to deify Longcat above Ceiling Cat. As such, these are all considered apocraphal, or non-canonical.

Ceiling Cat narrative on Daily Kos

This narrative contains a certain image that has raised a number of eyebrows on all sides. In this image, Longcat and Tacgnol are labeld Basement Cat and Ceiling Cat. This has upset Catnarok enthusiasts, and is seen as a blashemous idolitry from the aspect of The Lolcat Bible.

According to Ben Huh, CEO of Icanhazcheezburger:

<a href=http://icanhascheezburger.com/2008/04/07/funny-pictures-the-final-battle-for-our-souls-begins/ > This was the subject of much rage because of the clear mislabeling of Longcat and Tacgnol There were much calls for An Hero-ing.
There is much danger in the assumption that there is concrete singular linear line of story arc from Ceiling Cat to other named cats. There are some people who are trying to organize LC and CC as the same entity, but my recollection and popular assumption is not so.

Ben Huh
CEO
I Can Has Cheezburger?

Another item worth noting is how most visual representations of Ceiling Cat as a deity that were created after Basement Cat, depict Ceiling Cat as white instead of orange, which is often a contributing factor toward some equating Longcat with Ceiling Cat himself.

More references:

Sewer Horse/Basement Horse

About Sewer Horse

Originally known as Sewer Horse, this image started as a varant on the Ceiling Cat meme.
Although Ceiling Cat search traffic was well into it’s second year, activity didn’t peak until April of 2008. During interest peaks such as these, memetic instances tend to proliferate in high numbers, and as a result, we can see interest in Sewer Horse peak two months after Ceiling Cat began to wane.

By comparing “ceiling cat”, “sewer horse”, “basement cat”, and Catnarok, we begin to develop a clear picture of the sequence of events.

Sept of 2007: queries for Catnarok first appear.
October of 2007: queries for Ceiling Cat spike, apparently due to Catnarok.
Interest in Ceiling Cat rises steeply beginning in February 2008, reaching it’s pinnacle by April 2008. This same month, queries for Basement Cat appear.
June 2008: Sewer horse appears inexpicably, and in a manner seemingly unrelated to Catnarok, harkening back to the “exploitable” roots of the Ceiling Cat Meme.

Sewer Horse appears to be a “throwback” of sorts.

The first mention of Sewer Horse in Urbandictionary.com was on May 15th, 2007, although the definition refers to a person, rather than the Sewer Horse that watches one masturbate; a definition which was posted on June 13th of 2008.

Also on June 13th of 2008, Sewerhorse.com was privately registered.

ED first wrote about Sewer Horse on January 14th, 2008.

Sewer Horse appears on MuseumOfHoaxes.com on June 17th of 2008.

Amber Amputee and Basement Horse

On January 31st, 2009This picture of Myspace personality Amber Amputee with a photoshopped Sewer Horse, and titled simply WTF, made it to the Digg front page with over 27,000 Diggs. The name “Basement Horse” was coined in the comments section of the page by user seforbes.

Later that day, the short-lived basementhorse.blogspot.com was created.

On the same day, January 31st, 2009, basementhorse.com was registered by Australian, Wayne Whatford.

By early February, 2009, Buzzfeed user Sarah Hebard posted the same photo to Buzzfeed.com, with the title of Basement Horse.

Google Insights

The term “Sewer Horse” was first to peak in June of 2008, with searches for “Floor Horse” catching up by November of 2008. But “basement horse” peaked high above all the others in February of 2009; most likely due to Digger activity.

About

Starting on 4Chan’s /b/ in 2005, Caturday at one time was a tradition on 4Chan in which Anonymous would primarily focus on posting lolcat threads on Saturdays. In fact, locats as we know them today grew out of Caturday, before spilling over into other sites, such as Icanhascheezburger.

Excerpt from The Daily Pennsylvanian:

The most primal versions of LOLcats appeared years ago on an Internet image board called 4chan, when Saturdays were designated as “Caturdays” – a special day to post photos of cats.

Excerpt from The Boston Phoenix:

Though the original lolcat meme, called “Caturday,” first started in the 4chan message boards years ago, I Can Has Cheezburger was instrumental in breaking the animal-based image macros and the phonetic “lolspeak” vernacular into the mainstream.

This practice has been expanded, and the idea that “every day is Caturday” has caught on as well.

The observence of Caturday can also be found on Icanhazcheezburger.com.

[this article is a stub and can be improved by finding the first instance of Caturday]

About

The act of placing one’s face in one’s hands, or “facepalming” is a gesture of nonverbal-communication common among many cultures. The action conveys a message of dismay and is often a reaction toward someone’s momentary lapse of logic, judgement, or memory. This reaction may be directed toward another person or be self-deprecating.

One of the most popular facepalm images around is one of Captain Jean-Luc Picard from Star Trek the Next Generation, clutching his face in disbelief.

Auto-Tune

About the Software

Auto-Tune is an automated pitch-correction and audio-processing software created by Antares Audio Technologies, introduced in 1997.

At first, Auto-Tune was primarily used as a subtle way to cover the mistakes of a vocalist off their game; smoothly sliding the pitch to the correct note.

Then, in 1998, Cher’s single Believe came out. People had heard vocoders in the past, but this was different. Cher’s voice snapped from one pitch to the next, as if her vocal chords had been quantized, causing people to ask, “What’s that effect?”

It was Auto-Tune, used excessively, to distort the tonal features of the voice.

Auto-Tune Spreads Online

With the expense of the Antares Auto-Tune plugin and the relative lack of social networking sites at the time, Auto-Tune remained something of a trade secret among many record producers who simply wanted to save time in the studio.

But as social communities, user-generated content, video tutorials, and open-source software development proliferated online in recent years, so did the availabilty, usage, and experimentation of Auto-Tune.

In 2005, rapper T-Pain made his debut with the album Rappa Ternt Sanga. The album used Auto-Tune heavily, on every song; giving T-Pain his signature sound. His first single Sprung can be viewed here, although embedding has been disabled.

2007, Auto-Tune Gains Momentum

According to Google Insights for Search 2007 marked the beginning of the public’s curiosity about Auto-Tune.

Many would call it a gimmick, and many would be right. But regardless, T-Pain’s followup 2007 album Epiphany debuted at #1, bringing the “always on Auto-Tune” artist to the masses.

2007 was also the year Portal was released, featuring the song “Still Alive” written by Jonathan Coulton and sung by Ellen McLain as GLaDOS.

The popularity of T-Pain, Portal and similar use of the effect by other popular artists such as Rhianna and Kanye West would cause many more to again ask “What’s that effect?”

Videos

On Youtube, many a “How to get the T-Pain effect” video was made. The conversation started between aspiring audio techs, but because of the versatility of the “just add Auto-Tune” formula, the conversation spread from serious projects, to silly ones.

With both the mainstream media and a large chunk of user generated content now saturated in Auto-Tune, it seems that we’ve reached critical mass.

Controversy soon arose surrounding Auto-Tune, involving vocalists who use auto-tune, and those who feel that Auto-Tune is a ripoff.

On June 5th, 2009, Jay-Z’s D.O.A. (Death of Autotune) was released online. Auto-Tune had obviously become saturated in both mainstream media and user generated content, and the anti-Auto-Tune movement now has a spokeman.
Yakety Sax (The Benny Hill Theme)

About the Song

The song Yakety Sax was written by Boots Randolph and James Q. “Spider” Rich in 1963. Randolph recorded the song and released it as a single 45 that same year.

The Benny Hill Show ran first ran from 1955-1968, with Yakety Sax becoming the show’s theme song somewhere in between. The song typically was set to “chase” themed sketches heavy with slaptick sight-gags.

Usage online.

In 2002, Something Awful user CheechLizard created a thread entitled “Anything+Benny Hill Theme=Funny.” CheechLizard remarked that he came to this realization while listening to the radio, and the thread tended to focus on the layering of audio onto the theme. It should be noted that video remixes were uncommon in 2002.

By 2005, YouTube had become the primary video-sharing site where the lion’s share of video-remixing took place. And so, Yakkety Sax can be found there as well.

Anything Better w/ Benny Hill Hypothesis

The titles of many videos suggest that nearly anything is better when paired with “The Benny Hill Theme.”

Phonetic Translations

About

Misheard lyrics have been around forever. This phenomena predates the internet; but the internet gave the public a forum in which to share them.
The meme surfaced in many disconnected places on the internet because the compulsion to share misheard lyrics is a common human experience.
For example, if you’ve ever heard Manfred Mann’s Blinded by the Light then you’ve probably misheard some lyrics that sound like “wrapped up like a douche."

Early Flash Examples

Hyakugojyuuichi! is a flash animation created by Neil Cicierega in February of 2001. The animation visually consists of various pop culture references, and the audio is a track from the Japanese version of Pokemon. At 1:48, the Japanese lyrics are given subtitles. But these subitles aren’t a translation, they are simply, what the Japanese words sound like to an English-speaker; or a Phonetic Translation.

This type of flash animation was a staple of sites like Fark and New Grounds early on. A slightly older example of this is Hatten är din.

Hatten är din
This flash depicts a group in some sort of traditional costume, skewing while a hat magically floats from one head to another. To an English speaker this is simply nonsensical; but to Swedish speaking audiences, it was a hilarious parody.

The song in “Hatten är din” is actually Habbeetik an Arabic wedding song recorded in 1984 by Azar Habib.
Then in the year 2000, Patrik Nyberg and Johan Gröndahl had created a complete set of Swedish lyrics for the Arabic song which they then circulated with an MP3 via email! Soon, a flash animation was created by someone or some thing called Veckans Hatt (according to http://www.mlcsmith.com/strange/hatten/), and it was hosted it on http://come.to/hatten.

A proper English translation of the Swedish parody lyrics of the Arabic song are available on the site http://www.mlcsmith.com/strange/hatten

Phonetic Translations on Youtube

Today there are many examples of Phonetic Translations on Youtube. A fine specimen of this meme is Fart in the Duck.

Fart in the Duck is a phonetic translation of a song by the Dutch children’s show De Kabouterdans, or roughly “The Gnomes.”

And then there’s the song Renai Sentai Shitsu Ranger by Japanese pop group Nochiura Natsumi with phonetic subtitles.

Benny Lava

One of the most popular phonetic translation videos on Youtube today is Crazy Indian Video created by Youtube user Buffalax on August 18th, 2007. The original song is “Kalluri Vaanil” by Tamil artists Prabhu Deva and Jaya Sheel, but is known around the interwebs as “Benny Lava.”

When any viral video garners millions of views, parodies are likely to follow. In this case, the Benny Lava English phonetic subtitles are actually being sung.

Google Trend
An interesting sidenote: A Google Trends analysis shows that Kalluri Vaanil peaked briefly in the second half of 2006 before eventually flat-lining. However, with the arrival of the Benny Lava parody in the last quarter of 2007, there was a significant resurgence in interest for Kalluri Vaanil. Although Benny Lava had helped to revive Kalluri Vaanil, it has become more popular than the original, even in India. This lends statistical credence to the adage, “Parody is the sincerest form of flattery.”
Buffalax has created quite a name for himself within the meme of phonetic translations. In fact, nearly every video he makes is a phonetic translation; and of those, the view counts vary from the tens of thousands to the millions.

Tunak Tunak Tun by Indian singer Daler Mehndi, Buffalaxed

Misheard Lyrics

Songs sung in foreign languages can indeed sound like funny English phrases. One might assume that creating a phonetic translation of a song already in the English language might be more difficult, but there are many who have done this with success through a very simple technique.

Even Flow – Pearl Jam

Literal Music Videos are similar in form, but instead use newly recorded audio to interpret the visuals of the video.

The Icy Hot Stuntaz

A threesome of “rappers” from Toccoa, Georgia, (pop. >9000) posted their pics on the legendary Geocities site http://www.geocities.com/icyhotstuntazz/ in 2001 in a attempt to gain world-renowned fame.

“The Icy Hot Stuntaz” were Ricky Hedd AKA “Blade”, Brian Edmonds AKA “Da Flame” and Eric Dean AKA “Freeze.”

The site mostly consisted of pictures of the three, posing with fake glimmers on fake bling, throwing up fake gang signs. The site was ripe for parody, and mirrors of the site soon appeared all over the internet, sometimes including parodies of their songs, making it difficult to discern which songs were created by the Stuntaz and which were created by those parodying them.

Parody mirror

Although Blade and Freeze left the trio around 2001, Brian Edmonds is still pursuing his music career under then name B-Shoc.

Today, interest in “The Icy Hot Stuntaz” has all but disappered, as can be seen from Google Trends.
Lee Hotti and Friends

About

This meme article covers the nebulous Wannabe-Gotti/Jersey Shore Douchebag internet meme that goes by many names.

In chronological order of appearance, the most notable of these instances are as follows:

Lee Hotti (2006)

My New Haircut (2007)

Shit Was So Cash (2007)

But first, some background

Growing Up Gotti

In 2004, A&E began airing the series Growing Up Gotti, starring the daughter of the late mafia boss John Gotti, Victoria Gotti, and her three douchebag sons. The show was canceled by 2005 due to low ratings.

Lee Hotti

On January 9th, 2006 a user named MarlboroMan created a thread on the Sherdog forums entitled Pic of me and mah boys up in Jersey using a picture taken from the myspace of a New Jersey resident who called himself Lee Hotti.

Over the course of four days, the thread spanned 51 pages, garnering 935 replies; most of which ridiculed the people in the photo.

Many thought they embodied everything that was wrong with Myspace.
John and lee hotti PSA

By January 16th, 2006 a mock tribute site was constructed at Leehotti.com.

Today LeeHotti.com has been sold to a porn site, and two of the three brothers have taken down their Myspaces, with the exception of Jonathan who now features far less glitter and animated bitchs on his site, and has disabled comments.

My New Haircut

“My New Haircut” by mca1018 was uploaded to Youtube on June 27th, 2008. The viral video today has over 22 million views.

While there were hilarious parodies to be had, most of them seemed to neglect the Jersey Shore Douchebag wannabe Mafioso Italian-stereotyping that is key, and therefore fall outisde of the meme as seen here in “My New Haircut: Asian Addition.”

Following up on the success of the initial video, mca1018 created a number of “My New Haircut” and the series L2X News on his Youtube page.

The “Shit was SO CASH” Copypasta

Acccording to Dramatica folklore, a young Paulie Carbone, calling himself “John,” posted what would become the “So Cash” copypasta on /b/ in 2007.

My name is John, and I hate every single one of you. All of you are fat, retarded, no-lifes who spend every second of their day looking at stupid ass pictures. You are everything bad in the world. Honestly, have any of you ever gotten any pussy? I mean, I guess it’s fun making fun of people because of your own insecurities, but you all take to a whole new level. This is even worse than jerking off to pictures on facebook.

Don’t be a stranger. Just hit me with your best shot. I’m pretty much perfect. I was captain of the football team, and starter on my basketball team. What sports do you play, other than “jack off to naked drawn Japanese people”? I also get straight A’s, and have a banging hot girlfriend (She just blew me; Shit was SO cash). You are all faggots who should just kill yourselves. Thanks for listening.

Pic Related: It’s me and my bitch.

The “Shit was SO cash” Copypasta exploded in a burst-infusion of popularity before dying out some months later.

While Paulie Carbone was a real person, who died in a car accident that year, there are discrepencies that make it appear that “John” probably wasn’t Paulie Carbone
car accident.

A tribute video for Carbone was made by his friends. Althought the man in the video has the same signature haircut and look, he does not appear to be the same person in the pics from the 4Chan posts. It is likely that the guy in the picture is one of many random Jersey Shore Douchebags depicted in many threads all around the internet.

The Common Thread

By comparing the Google Insights for Search data between “Lee Hotti,” “My New Haircut,” and “Shit was so cash,” we can notice the connections between these different instances and draw conclusions.

Although “Lee Hotti” peaked in January of 2006, there was a brief revival in interest in June, 2007.

“My New Haircut” was created in June of 2007, coinciding with the “Hotti” revival.

“My New Haircut” peaked in popularity in December, 2007.

One month later, in January 2008 there was a revived interest in Lee Hotti.

The “Shit was SO cash” copypasta first appeared the very next month, February 2008.

Notable YTMNDs

http://guidos.ytmnd.com"

http://hottitoomuchtanfordabody9.ytmnd.com/

http://guidorly.ytmnd.com/

Conclusion
Growing Up Gotti with the help of the Internet helped to put a new face on an old stereotype.
