KYM Workshop: Reddit Copypasta Advice

Whenever there is a post on Reddit asking for advice on how to break up with a significant other, there are often several replies featuring a copypasta advising the OP to “delete facebook, hit the gym and lawyer up.” Does anyone know how this got started? Ridiculously Photogenic Emirati Guy

Several blogs are reporting that this guy Omar Borkan Al Gala was one of the three Emirati men deported from Saudi Arabia for being “too handsome.” His photo was posted on Reddit yesterday and hit the front page. Neetzan Zimmerman of Gawker seems to be skeptical that it was actually him and Omar has yet to confirm or deny it. Redditor thejoyoflearning submitted an image macro using a photo of Omar to /r/AdviceAnimals, referring to him as “Too Handsome Habibi.” Other Redditors seem to be calling him...

LOL I don’t hate documenting advice animal memes at all. Researching and documenting all kinds of entries can be fun. My point was that I don’t think they are all funny or clever just because I make an entry about it. It means the meme popped up on our radar big enough for us to cover it.

Weekly Workshop: Classic Song Memes

We were discussing other song memes that we haven’t yet covered on the site and we all agreed that both Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” and R. Kelly’s “Ignition (Remix)” were two hits that were notable enough to deserve entries. Workshop: Epic Handshake

This Arnold Schwarzenegger handshake scene from Predator seems to have quite a few parodies and remixes. Anyone have an idea on where this started originally? Feel free to start up an entry!

Breaking: Banksy Arrest Hoax?

BuzzFeed Twitter calling it fake: This press release stating Banksy was arrested is totally fake and totally hilarious prlog.org/12085513-banks… -- BuzzFeed News (@BuzzFeedNews) February 22, 2013

"You Had One Job"

The earliest one of these I remember seeing was this wildfires image:

Marijuana Entry

[10] Guy is definitely referencing marijuana. The numbers 1-10 are a scoring system to rate how stoned someone is in the marijuana subreddit /r/trees.

KYM Workshop: Sam the permanently worried cat (Eyebrows Cat)

There have been pictures of a cat named Sam with black markings on his head that look like eyebrows circulating online recently. Anyone have any info on this cat or places his pictures have been posted? I found several Reddit threads: Jan 28: /r/pics Jan 30: /r/aww Jan 31: /r/aww

Trinidad James "Popped a Molly, I'm Sweatin"

The line “popped a molly, I’m sweatin” from the song “All Gold Everything” by Trinidad James seems to have taken off as a catchphrase these days. There are quite a few image macros going around: Anyone have a clue on where these first started popping up, or how the song started getting big?

Thanks Obama

Some of the GIFs seem to have come from the infomercial fails in the /r/wheredidthesodago subreddit.

KYM Workshop: GoPro Videos

We’ve noticed quite a few of these GoPro perspective videos going around for awhile now ever since the Hula Cam video from Burning Man went big in September: Now we’ve seen GoPros attached to animals, swords, etc. If you know of any other significant GoPro videos or have info about how they spread online chime in on this thread!

KYM Workshop: Circlejerk

While the term “circlejerk” has roots outside of the Internet, it has taken a somewhat different meaning online in recent years. Lately it seems to be used as a pejorative referring to cliche or stereotypical beliefs and attitudes within a subculture. I suspect this has a lot to do with the popularity of Reddit’s /r/circlejerk subreddit, and the many other circlejerk-style subreddits that have come after. Does anyone know if this was used on other sites before Reddit in this context?

KYM Workshop: Macklemore - "Thrift Shop"

I seem to recall seeing this Macklemore “Thrift Shop” video initially getting big on Reddit a couple of months ago. It’s currently at over 55 million views. Last week I saw a parody called “Pot Shop” and yesterday we posted the Lindsey Stirling version. I did a quick YouTube search and it looks like there are quite a few other parody versions as well. Anyone know more about this?

Intervention Computer Duster Episode: "Walking on Sunshine"

Anyone remember this Intervention episode with this woman Allison who was hooked on huffing computer duster? I remember when it first started making the rounds online, quite a few remixes began popping up, with some of them riffing on her “walking on sunshine” Does anyone have a clue on which websites the videos were initially passed around on and want to start up an entry?
