I’m a frequent poster at Tom’s Hardware and its definitely been a constant phrase mentioned in the forums / comments for years now. I actually just came to this site to read about the meme because we were discussing it on Toms today. The phrase comes up all the time when commenting on articles about cars, phones, anything.

eg. The new Bugatti Veyron has 1050HP.

“But can it play Crysis?”

The question is no longer ever posted seriously (hasn’t been for years now). Its gotten to the point where mods over at Toms have started removing Can It Play Crysis comments because people just won’t let the meme die. Its is also frequently parodied:

Article on a new electric / pedal bike:

“But can it run… uphill? /ducks”

The user knows that the meme is no longer cool, so they put a twist on it and add the /ducks to show that they know that people are tired of it. These posts have been around for more than a year and are now getting old and frequently downranked.

Now that Crysis 2 is coming out (next year), there have also been “Can it play Crysis 2” comments, but those have now also become old and get downranked.

I’m not certain of the requirements this site has to consider something a meme, but Can It Play Crysis is by far the most common phrase on Toms Hardware even years after it stopped being ‘cool’.
