Trolling

This is an introductory/supplementary entry to Trolling and related online behaviors.

Trolling mememath via Penny Arcade

About

A troll is someone who will state something only with the intention of stirring up controversy. Typicaly the statement is so absurd that only the most noobish of noobs will get offended and respond.

For example, one might purposefuly spel things wrong or use poor grammar, knowing that this will drive some people crazy, eliciting a response.

A more advanced troll might even spell things wrong in a post criticizing the spelling in someone else’s post, hoping to elicit an angry counter-reaction. Numerous forums and Usenet boards are dedicated to the fine art of what the NYTimes called “manipulating other people’s emotional equilibrium” [trying to remember for sure if they should get the credit]

Trolling can be considered a form of cyberbullying and in video game circles the practice is often called “griefing”.

Why Troll?

Successful trolling brings lulz — pleasure at the expense of others. By participating in flamewars with a troll they become your puppetmaster, manipulating your emotions for their own enjoyment.

Wikipedia has an overview of research behind the human motivation to troll & acquire lulz.

If you respond to a troll, you are said to be feeding the troll. You’ve got better things to do than feed trolls… so keep your coolface on.

Trolling By Promotional Vector

A common problem is determining if someone is sincerely crazy/idiotic/racist/etc. on purpose… or if they are trolling.

This controversy often fuels the popularity of the original content so it tends to go unmoderated. The true troll stirrs up controversy over something’s legitimacy in order to fuel this popularity as part of their original intention.

Boxxy is widely considered an ‘accidental troll’, containing many features of a troll but w/o the purposefulness and true intent needed to make her an actual troll

debate over the legitimacy of WoW Freakout/Account Crusher accuses OP of trolling

Numerous derivative memes have also sprung up around communicating to others to beware that a troll is present in a forum thread or conversation.

Trolling In The Wild

Tom Green’s call-in talk show is often trolled

The mythical Gold Membership Required

Trollface/Coolface is a meme originating with a comic depicting ‘what trolls want you to believe’ vs. ‘what is actually happening’

I’m 12 years old and what is this???

Obviously incendiary subjects like 9/11

Gold Membership Trolling

About

False images that claim a Gold or Premium Account is neccessary to view an image are a common type of troll that can be found on image boards, forums, and social networks alike.

The motive of this troll is sometimes a phishing scams in which the party gullible enough to fall for it enters personal information which is then used to exploit the individual for profit.

A less malicious motive for this type of trolling involves posting a Gold Account image simply for the gratification of witnessing gullibility on the part of those who rage in reaction to such an obvious ploy.

Origin

The bogus 4Chan Gold Account troll obviously originated on 4Chan. But it’s not entirely clear if the bogus Facebook Gold Account troll was born from the 4Chan Gold meme or not. The ED entry makes no mention of Facebook Gold accounts, but this thread on Askville.Amazon.com seems to support the theory that Facebook Gold Account trolling is a derivative of 4Chan Gold Account trolling.

Kill It With Fire

Origin

Mankind has been killing things with fire since our early ancestors, so if something undesireable needs to be done away with, fire is a tried and true way. Now the term “kill it with fire” or often “KILL IT WITH FIRE” seems to have peaked once in 2007, before finally gaining a foothold online in 2008. according to google trends.

The earliest instance we could find was here in a comments section on an article about furries, but whether this is the first instance or just someone posting what they saw on another website is unknown.

“Kill it with fire” is believed to be a reference to the 1982 John Carpenter classic The Thing.

Usage

The term “kill it with fire” is used to respond to a post where something is so disgusting that the only emotion in your complete being is to burn that motherf*cker down. The term is also placed on pictures with flamethrowers and their ilk to show how much fire should be used in the situation at hand.

Battletoads Preorder

About Battletoads

Battletoads by Rare Ltd. was released for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1991. A number of sequels were produced including Battlemaniacs, Battletoads & Double Dragon, and Super Battle Toads Arcade

Battletoads as a means of trolling

On 4Chan when someone posts a screen shot from a videogame, a common troll is to reply which the phrase, “Is this Battletoads?” According to Dramatica, this troll predates the Gamestop pranks.

Gamestop Preorder Pranks of 2007

On September 12-14th 2007, Anonymous targeted over 40 Gamestop stores making prank calls requesting preorders of Battletoads II, Battletoads for the Wii, and other odd requests.

There was even a “website:” http://battletoadspreorder.com/ with gave a number to call for information on the game. The number given was a randomly chosen Church of Scientology phone number.

According to this LiveJournal post the behavior spread to eBaum’s world and continued in some degree for at least a month.

April 16th, 2008, a hoax Battletoads Wii Preorder video was uploaded to Youtube.

A number of meme-heavy Battletoads hoax videos would be created over the course of the summer of 2008.

Node 3: a half-hearted attempt

On February 21st, 2009 a link entitled "Help NASA Name Node 3 “Battletoad” appeared on Digg.com’s front page. This would soon be overshadowed first by a wave of fans of the cult hit Firefly voting for Serenity and then March 3rd, Stephen Colbert requested that his fans write him in for the naming contest.

At least one random Anon made a video proclaiming that Anonymous would remove his name from NASA’s list.

However, Colbert won the contest, and NASA chose to throw out the results and name Node 3 Tranquility instead.

RULE 34

Rule 34 of the Internet Says:

if you can think of it, someone has already made a porn of it… no exceptions.

Meme of Dubious Origin

According to Wikipedia, Rule 34 is generally thought to originate from “The Rules of the Internet” copypasta. Despite the possibility that Rule 34 came from the larger list, this singular rule is by far the most popular, widespread, and therefore enforced. This can be proven by studying the search results and activity.

Search Traffic

First, a Google Insights for Search analysis.

The following terms were compared:

Rule 34

the rules of the internet

100 rules of the internet

Rules 1 and 2

Rule 34 has generated over 99% more search traffic than any of the compared terms.
“The Rules of the Internet” appears to have existed prior to 2004, but that specific phrase is a very common part of speech and is likely to have appeared in wide usage outside of the context of (and prior to) the copypasta.

Search Volume

As of today (June 2nd, 2009) the phrase “The Rules of the Internet” returns 32.5 Million results.

“Rule 34” returns 277,000 results.

“Rules 1 and 2” returns 90,600 results.

Origin: Zoom-Out

According to the LURKMORE WIKI, Rule 34 originated from this comic on the now defunct site http://www.zoom-out.co.uk

On May 15th, 2009 in a thread entitled “Ask me about inventing Rule 34” on the SomethingAwful forums, a user named Electric Eggs claimed to be the former author of the comic on Zoom-Out.co.uk, and inventor of “Rule 34.”

A long time ago, me and my sister made a web-comic.

She would draw and I would write. Most of the time it was pretty dross. I’m not the greatest comedy writer and I was following the dark path of web-comics; lovely video game jokes.

We had a passable following, and occasionally I would make a funny joke. Life was good.

Then one day someone sent me Calvin and Hobbes porn. And I made a little comic about how ridicolous the scope of porn was on the internet.

Anyways, college and life got in the way and we stopped updating. But one day…

Someone mentioned rule 34 on an IRC I was in. I was like “Wah?”. Googled it and saw how crazy it had become.

I actually have the original drawing somewhere in my loft, seriously I should ebay that poo poo.

Also, I’m skint so I can’t afford for the domain, so if any goon wants to take zoom-out.co.uk, it’s going up for grabs soon.

I keep meaning to throw a few more comics together, but both me and my sister are doing Uni work so it’s not too feasible.

So yeah, erm, ask away…

(USER WAS PUT ON PROBATION FOR THIS POST)

Archive.org confirms that the site Zoom-out.co.uk existed from 2004-2006, and did indeed host webcomics. Unfortunatel, the images do not show up.

Correlation of Dates

Zoom-out existed from 2004-2006.

Rule 34 first appeared on Dramatica on October 12, 2006.

The 48 Rules of the Internet appear on Dramatica about 5 weeks later, November 25, 2006.

The oldest mention of Rule 34 on urbandictionary.com was on March 30th, 2006.

Current State

Although we can confirm that Rule 34 is by far the only important rule, we can neither confirm nor deny the origin at this point, but there are two likely paths that this meme spread.

Scenario A:
Rule 34 first appeared on zoom-out.co.uk sometime between 2004-2006, then spread to somethingawful, and eventually became ubiquitous.

Scenario B:
Rule 34 was the most memorable and funniest of “The Rules of the Internet” copypasta, which currently has an unknown origin.

With the information given, Scenario A is likely to be the more plausible of the two. This post will retain the “researching” tag until more facts can either prove or disprove the origin story.

NO U

The NO U image is a sarcastic way of pointing out that the OP’s comments apply more to himself and is therefore an idiot. It is also an effective method of trolling a troll (which goes hand in hand with the former sentence).

This meme originated on the something awful forums where epix flame wars would often erupt. Eventually the arguments became so illogical and the insults so repetitive that often it needed to be pointed out that the OP was being a hypocrite.

NO U harkens back to simpler days when we as children would engage in what were to be the precursors to forum wars. Arguments over common issues would devolve into anarchy as neither party was willing to concede their point. This inevitably led to attacks on character which subsequently devolved into childish name calling which of course would usually finish with NO YOU. A major problem is that it can start an endless loop of NO Us demonstrated below.

As long as there are forums where any asshat with an opinion can post, NO U will always have a home. Short of ignoring idiotic comments, this is a simple and effective way of pointing out that the OP’s comments are in fact more aptly applied to himself than his subject.

THE GAME

You’ve just lost The Game.

The Game is one of the simplist distortions of game logic ever invented; by which simply thinking about The Game causes one to lose.

Due to the futility and inevitable loss, The Game could be viewed as a statement of the human condition; that is to say, humankind’s struggle against fundamental laws of nature. THE GAME results in a double negative scenario where trying to not do something is the catalyst for said event.

Origins

THE GAME was invented in 1977 by members of the Cambridge University Science Fiction Society (CUSFS) who would regularly meet at the Horse and Groom pub (Kings Street, Cambridge, UK) to drink and discuss game theory.

From losethegame.com

The members of CUSFS assert that the creation of The Game was a collective effort, but Nigel Goldenfeld and Mark Haslett were probably the most responsible for releasing it into the public. The CUSFS 1977 collective includes:

Dr Nigel Goldenfeld – “What’s scary about all this is that it took so long for it to take over the world.”

Mark Haslett – “We did not realise what a viral concept it was and I continue to lose from time to time now 30 years on.”

Philip Brice – “The idea developed of a game in which you didn’t know you were competing in until you weren’t.”

Dr Nick Lowe – “Our meetings are still punctuated, and often opened, with the words ‘Gah! I lose.’”

Dr Richard Pinch

Online Apperance

The first known appearance of THE GAME online was on <a href=http://www.arseburgers.co.uk/blog/archives/000246.html">Paul Taylor of West Midland’s blog in 2002.

A major contributing factor to this meme’s virability is the simplicity of its execution. Simply saying “THE GAME” instantly causes everyone within earshot to lose. Whether they are aware that they are playing or not, they have now thought about The Game. Similar behaviour can be observed in a multitude of scenarios because there is always that one person out there who enjoys screwing with other’s minds.

Other Responses

A niche execution of THE GAME has come into being in the form of non sequiturers. Essentially a story will be posted where the only goal will be to capture the reader’s attention. At the end of the story however, the true goal is revealed

Example:

You will never believe what happened to me this morning! I was waking up and doing my morning routine, eat breakfast, take a shower, brush my teeth, that sort of thing. When I was about to get changed, I saw something in my window that looked a little strange. I went to look and there he was, a man was staring through my window on a ladder!

Just as soon as he knew I saw him he started climbing down the ladder and I ran for the door outside. On my way out I grabbed the bat I keep under my bed. When I got outside I saw him running down my block and I began chasing after him. We ran for nearly 10 minutes and reached some woods. Then from there we ran another 15 until I lost sight of him.

Lost, in the middle of the woods, chasing a peeping Tom. I knew something like this could only happen to me.

The search seemed over when a bit deeper in the woods I heard the man scream. I ran out there and saw him sitting on the ground a good distance away from me. As I got closer I could see he had gotten his foot stuck in a bear trap! Actually I’m not so sure it was a bear trap because it was a bit smaller but you get the point. I walked up to him with my bat and said the sweetest one liner I could think up on the spot.

“Game over fucker” and I hit him in the face with my bat. He began to sob a bit as he held his bleeding nose, but to my surprise he began to laugh. This startled me so I hit him again and said “what’s funny faggot!” and he said, “read the first word of all the last paragraphs.”

divide by zero

Origins

Division by zero is thought to be impossible. Many postulate that if anything was in fact divided by zero the apocalypse would ensue.

Though there are many variations on this meme, they all revolve around the theme of something extremely bad happening.

Usage

Here is a common usage: It is implied that someone divided by zero, and now there’s a hole in the bottom of the sea.

This meme has a high level of compatibility with other memes, demonstrated below.

If anyone cares about the math, this is why you cannot divide by zero

The Olmecs are credited with the discovery of 0. Thus, it is also believed that they were the first ones to divide by it. We can see how that turned out for them since they aren’t here anymore.

????

PROFIT!!!!1

This meme comes directly from South Park‘s season 2, episode 17 (30th in total) which aired on December 16th, 1998. In this particular episode, the children’s underwear are being stolen from them by gnomes for the purpose of “profit.”

The process, as explained by thee gnomes goes something like this.

Step 1. Collect underpants.

Step 2. ?

Step 3. PROFIT

The gnomes lack of a business plan is used as a foil to the other main theme of the episode, a focus on large corporations. While the character Tweek’s parents are busy trying to figure out how their small coffee shop will compete with the giant Harbuck’s corporation (Starbucks Parody) the Gnomes illustrate a satire on crazy, unfounded money-making schemes.

Almost as soon as the episodes had aired, journalists were already using the South Park reference to describe the shortcomings of companies that failed in the big dot com collapse. In short, those who failed to develop a coherent strategy for collecting profit were behaving like Underpants Gnomes.

Today, the meme is typically used in forums or comments sections as a response that implies sarcastic disregard for the utility or purpose of a post.

The fact that this behavior has had such a huge staying power online and also outside of the context of South Park is what makes this an Internet Meme.
Newfags Can't Triforce

Origin

“newfags can’t triforce” is a recently occurring 4chan call/response meme. The “triforce” is a critical component of popular video game Legend of Zelda, and is 3 triangles assembled into a larger triangle.

On 4chan a thread is started challenging 4chan noobs (“newfags”) to produce correctly formatted triforcii. Those who simply copy & paste the triforce will result in this:

▲
▲ ▲

Hilarity ensues.

How to Triforce

The correct method of triforcing requires use of non-breaking space characters:

Windows: [alt-255] [alt-255] [alt-30] [enter] [alt 30] [alt 255] [alt 30]

Mac: [option-space] + [option-space] + [option-J] + [enter] + [option-J] + [option-space] + [option-J]

Linux : [Ctrl+Shift+U + a0] [Ctrl+Shift+U + a0] [Ctrl+Shift+U + 25b2] [Enter] [Ctrl+Shift+U + 25b2] [Ctrl+Shift+U + a0] [Ctrl+Shift+U + 25b2] (thx dumuh)

Jean-Luc Picard

Jean-Luc Picard is the fictional captain of the United Federation of Planets’ flagship, the USS Enterprise (NCC-1701D). As anyone who is familiar with the series will readily admit, he is one of the coolest characters ever dreamed up. He is like Sean Connery, Indiana Jones, Lex Luthor and King Solomon all rolled into one supremely ethical being.

Because Picard is an infallible source of truth, justice and reason invoking him to prove a point immediately grants credence to your opinion. Demonstrated below.

An artist by the name of DarkMateria has even gone so far as to create a song, entirely about the epicness that is Jean-Luc Picard

In my research I have come to the conclusion that the internet sees Picard as a kind of Father/arbitor figure, the use of Picard falls predominately in the category of rendering judgement

Since the interwebs are mostly used for flaming and the ilk pics such as this are most common

however, on the other hand, when a thread of suitable epicness needs to be recognized responses such as this are used

Y'all Niggas be postin in a Troll thread

“y’all niggas” is the 4chan equivalent of a safe word during BDSM. It’s function is to alert other members of the 4chan herd when they are in fact, posting in a troll thread. Similar behaviour can be observed in meerkats.

Whilst going about their daily habits, meerkats while beyond the safety of their underground tunnels are quite vulnerable to predators who would prey on their ignorance. So when a threat is identified by one meerkat, it communicates this information to the rest of its herd so that they can then leave the premises and avoid becoming prey.

When someone posts the “y’all niggas postin’ in a troll thread” it is a wakeup call to fellow /b/rothers that the OP has revealed himself to in fact be a troll, and the thread should be 404rrd as soon as possible.

I believe that “y’all niggas” will continue to be an effective means of identifying and dealing with trolls. It is the safe word that prevents things from getting out of control and keeps the troll population down.

you have my word, and my bow, and my axe

In the first installment of the Lord of the Rings trilogy, the Fellowship of the Ring, the council of Elrond, after Frodo proclaims that he will take the ring to Mordor Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli Utter the famous lines

“Aragorn: If by my life or death I can protect you, I will. You have my sword…
Legolas: …and you have my bow…
Gimli: …and my axe.”

While lulzy on its own, 4chan users saw it for what it was, epic thread potential.

what I believe is the first recorded combination of this, resulting in epic lulz occurred on july 12 2007 at 2:12 pm when a user proclaimed “I am going to marry the actress portraying Luna Lovegood you have my word” It was quickly followed up by “you have my bow,” and finished with “you have my axe”

and they rest gentlemen, is history

post scipt: it is also noteworthy that the council of Elrond is where Boromir delivered the gem “one does not simply walk into mordor”

double nigger

encyclopedia dramatica postulates that this meme origionated on /v/, I have yet to corroborate this but it can be safely assumed that it was made famous on /b/. This meme consists entirely of pages taken from the sonic comics, where the speech bubbles are whited out and filled in with humerous 4 panel jokes.

This falls under the format of 4panes, examples such as FFFFUUUU and the batman/joker dialogues being the most notable.

There are innumerable variations of this meme as people take it upon themselves to fill in what ever their minds can dream up for comedic effect. However because this is a 4pane the material is limited to the sonic comic, and the only spinoff meme that could come from this is the term “double nigger” this meme was short lived.

The Cake is a Lie

This meme has its origins in the popular PC game Portal.

While Portal is a meme in itself due to its viral spread among the denizens of the interwebs, “the cake is a lie” has been quoted so many times that it was become its own monster.

In a nutshell the game is about you, the character, inside a giant maze. An AI program runs the maze and has developed very sado-sexual feelings towards you so logic dictates that you skedaddle. Along the way you are pointed in the right direction by graffiti messages on the wall, one such message reads “the cake is a lie”

Now it has become a catchphrase that is still relevant even to this day.

Portal

From Wikipedia

Portal is a single-player first-person action/puzzle video game developed by Valve Corporation. The game was released in a bundle package called The Orange Box for Microsoft Windows and Xbox 360 on October 9, 2007, 1 2 and for the PlayStation 3 on December 11, 2007. 5 The Windows version of the game is also available for download separately through Valve’s content delivery system, Steam 7 and was released as a standalone retail product on April 9, 2008. 6 A stand-alone version was released on the Xbox 360 Live Arcade system on October 22, 2008; this version includes an additional fourteen bonus puzzles.

The game consists primarily of a series of puzzles that must be solved by teleporting the player’s character and other simple objects using the Aperture Science Handheld Portal Device (dubbed the “Portal Gun” or “ASHPD”), a unit that can create an inter-spatial portal between flat planes. The player character is challenged by an AI named “GLaDOS” to complete each puzzle in the “Aperture Science Computer-Aided Enrichment Center” using the Portal Gun with the promise of receiving cake when all the puzzles are completed. The unusual physics allowed by the portal gun are the emphasis of this game, and are an extension of a similar portal concept in Narbacular Drop; many of the team members from the DigiPen Institute of Technology that worked on Narbacular Drop were hired by Valve for the creation of Portal.

Portal has been acclaimed as one of the most original games in 2007 despite being comparatively short in length. The game has received praise for its unique gameplay and darkly humorous story, created with the assistance of Erik Wolpaw and Chet Faliszek of “Old Man Murray” fame. It is also revered for the character of GLaDOS, voiced by Ellen McLain in the English version, and the final credits song “Still Alive” written by Jonathan Coulton for the game. The game’s popularity has led to official merchandise from Valve including plush Companion Cubes as well as fan creations such as recreations of the cake and replicas of the “portal gun.”
