Keyboard Cat

Origins of Meme

The original Keyboard Cat video was created by performance artist Charlie Schmidt and uploaded to YouTube on June 7th, 2007.

Then on February 2nd, 2009 Brad O’Farrell used a clip from Schmidt’s video to express a moment of Fail in his own video, “Play him off, Keyboard Cat.”

Origin

Leeeeeeeeeeerooooy Jenkinnnnns is a catchphrase first screamed by a World of Warcraft player of the same name, just before ignorantly charging headlong into battle and ruining his group’s carefully laid plans. IRL Leeroy is known as Ben Schulz.

LET’S DO THIS!

The original video, well over 10M views (>9000)

The video and numerous catchphrases (“at least I have chicken” etc) would become much parodied, Ben would keynote ROFLCON in 2008, and it would even appear as a question on the gameshow Jeopardy

Brian Peppers

About

Brian Peppers was a sex offender from Ohio whose hard-to-believe photo was widely circulated on the Internet in 2005.

While it was initially suspected to be fake, online sleuths Snopes.com were able to confirm the photo’s authenticity with Ohio authorities. Snopes even managed to dig up some photos of Brian in highschool

Snopes also suggests that Peppers’ unusual appearance may be due to “malformation of the cranium caused by a branchial arch condition such as Apert syndrome or Crouzon syndrome.”

Spread

The photo of B-Peps followed a typical memetic path of photoshoppery, “OMG WTF” and “stop being so mean,” culminating in Jimbo Wales banning Brian Peppers from Wikipedia. On YTMND we would see numerous excellent pages for the fad, and the infamous ‘Allen Peppers incident’, which turned out to be fake.

Notable links

sadly, many notable sources for B-Pepe photoshops are now offline

Brian Peppers would set the bar high for sex-offender memes to come (e.g. Pedobear)

Crimes

Peppers was sentenced to 30 days in jail with 5 years probation in 1998 for the crime of “Gross Sexual Imposition.” Allegedly he groped a nurse on at least 2 occasions.

Single-Serving Sites

About

Single-serving sites are web sites comprised of a single page with a dedicated domain name and do only one thing. While such sites have existed since the dawn of the internet, the meme was detailed & named by popular linkblogger Jason Kottke in 2008

In fact, one of the earliest intenet memes was a single serving site: the Hampster Dance

List of Notable Single-Serving Sites

Purple.com

Sometimes Red, Sometimes Blue.com

Barack Obama is Your Bicycle (and numerous spinoffs)

Barack Obama is Your New Bicycle in particular has enjoyed a great deal of success and has been transformed into a book.

You’re The Man Now Dog was a single-serving site created by Max Goldberg and inspired by an irreverent audio snippet from the film Finding Forrester. The format — one piece of looping audio, one piece of repeated image, quasi-3D text effects — was so widely replicated that Goldberg established ytmnd.com as a community hub for this particular style of SSS. YTMND has gone on to launch many notable memes, including Captain Jean-Luc Picard, lol, internet, and Ueleleleleu (Batman)

The single-serving concept has more recently spread to platforms like Twitter & Tumblr, where people create “themed” blogs/microblogs, such as the Puddle Blog (which features daily photos of the same puddle) and Twitter accounts like the Tower Bridge, which documents the opening & closing of said and lets you know which ship was passing through.

There are also Single Serving Sites based around instant reactions.

Instant Rimshot: the earliest and best-known reaction site. Follows a successful joke or one-liner. Equivalent to “BADUM-TISH!” in spoken conversation.

Sad Trombone: follows an ironic or tragicomic observation. Equivalent to the vocalized “sad trombone sound” in spoken conversation.

Buuurn (that’s three ’U’s): follows a stinging insult, comeback or retort. Equivalent to “Burn!”, “Zing!” or “Oh snap!” in spoken conversation.

Instant Crickets: follows a failed joke or non sequitur. Equivalent to an awkward silence in spoken conversation.

Is Kanye West a Douchebag? There’s a little more to this one than first meets the eye.

Barack Obama is your new bicycle

barackobamaisyournewbicycle.com was created by San Francisco freelance writer and Wired contributing editor Mathew Honan in February 2008. Classified as a single-serving site, users would see random Barack Obama non sequiturs.

Quickly, the site gained a large following. The hotly contested presidential race fueled the growth of this meme, which produced various spin-offs, including Hillary Clinton is your new bicycle (defunct), Sarah Palin in your new bicycle’s flat tire, and The ‘… Is Your New Bicycle’ Meme Is Your New Bicycle. Other political single-serving sites were made for John McCain, Michelle Obama, and Ron Paul.

In August 2008, the book Barack Obama Is Your New Bicycle: 366 Ways He Really Cares was published, which included 366 Obama non sequiturs.

Some examples from the site and book include:

Barack Obama danced with your mom at your sister’s wedding

When one of your vocalists came down with a nasty bronchitis bug, Barack Obama sang backup in your band

Barack Obama left a comment on your blog

Barack Obama warmed up your car for you

Xzibit Yo Dawg

Origins

Xzibit is the host of the MTV show Pimp My Ride and is well known for putting awesome things like fishtanks, clothes dryers, and even fireplaces in the back of your car. Pimp.

The “Yo dawg” or “Sup dawg” image macro first appeared on the ’chans in early 2007 and experienced a resurgence in late 2008 on Reddit, Tumblr, and other mainstream forums & blogs. It follows a simple format:

Standard: {yo,sup} dawg, I herd you like X, so I put an X in your Y so you can VERB while you VERB
Repetitive: {yo,sup} dawg, I herd you like X, so I put an X in your X so you can X while you X
Abstract: {yo,sup} dawg, I herd you like X, so I put an Y in your Z so you can VERB while you VERB

Media

The following image is widely considered the original image macro:

The photo used in the original macro is from this promo photoshoot for the movie “Gridiron Gang”

Trending

“yo dawg” (blue), “sup dawg” (red)

Nesting, recursion

The Yo Dawg image macro has a unique characteristic in being recursive. This multi-layered structure in the Yo Dawg formula makes it reminiscient of the “strange loops” described in Douglas Hofstadter’s Gödel, Escher, Bach.

Xzibit’s reaction

The explosive popularity of microblogging service Twitter has reached celebrities, Xzibit included.

In one of his first tweets he decries his embodiment as a meme: View Tweet

…which led to the creation of this image macro:

Several days later, he rescinded his criticism, saying “i’m not mad @ you”: View Tweet

In the final stage of celeb-o-meme — “acceptance” — Xzibit embraces the yo dawg, attempting to his own: View Tweet

Hello My Future Girlfriend

“… this is what I sound like”

11 year old Mike Blount created the original “Hello My Future Girlfriend” site in 1998 while in the sixth grade. Many of the other kids at young Mike’s elementary school had “girlfriends,” and feeling left out, he busted out some MIDI files and made an epic web-page (note: archive via 2atoms)

A YouTube clip with the audio (and an unverified photo of Mike):

Testimony

Mike has explained the story in his own words:

…in an act of desperation, I created the web page. I planned to meet a nice girl in yahoo chat, and then give her the web page address, and hope for the best.

And on its viral spread:

In 2000, I received my first email from someone who had seen the web page. It was very negative, and quite surprising. I just shrugged it off, and thought that it was just the one person that saw the page. The next day, my hotmail inbox was flooded; I bet I received at least 50 messages. Some were positive, and some were negative. At the time I was only 13 years old. The positive emails were encouraging and the negative emails had a depressing effect. It seemed for every one positive email, there were three negative ones. Soon the phone calls started. Middle of the night, people would call, and ask if I had a girlfriend. I had not told my parents about the web page, and I really didn’t want them to know. Well, eventually I had to tell them. They couldn’t believe I had done it, well, neither could I. So, I tried to get into my tripod account and delete the web page. However, I had forgotten the password, so, there was nothing I could do. Later, I found out that my simple web page had been mirrored all over the internet.

Where is he now?

Mike is still active on the internet to this day, and has a MySpace and a blog

He also sells “memeriabilia” in the Official Hello My Future Girlfriend Shop (on CafePress)

People have made t-shirts of the meme: http://www.flickr.com/photos/elemenoh/2996613291/

Boxxy

In January 2009 a young GaiaOnline user named “BoxxyBabee” posted several hyperactive, seemingly innocuous videos to YouTube. Discovered via a post on i-am-bored, the division between Boxxy h8rs and those declaring her “Queen of /b/” culminated in a civil war that crashed 4chan.

Some called her cancer — others called her the cure.

Don't tase me bro!

On September 17, 2007, Andrew Meyer confronted Senator John Kerry at a speech at the University of Florida about Kerry’s involvement with the organization known as Skull & Bones. The encounter ended with Meyer being forcibly removed by police and tasered repeatedly, during which time he screamed the famous phrase “DON’T TASE ME BRO!”

The Large Hadron Collider is “the world’s largest and highest-energy particle accelerator, intended to collide opposing particle beams, protons at an energy of 7 TeV/particle or lead ions at 574 TeV/ion” (Wikipedia)

The LHC is also the source of a great deal of anxiety, as some physicists have stated this atom-smasher will create tiny blackholes that could destroy the Earth!! This hasn’t happened… yet.

It's Over 9000!

About

Dragon Ball (ドラゴンボール Doragon Bōru?) is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Akira Toriyama. With the ending of Dragon Ball, Toei Animation quickly released a second anime television series, Dragon Ball Z (ドラゴンボールZ（ゼット） Doragon Bōru Zetto, commonly abbreviated DBZ). Picking up where the first left off, Dragon Ball Z is adapted from the final twenty-six volumes of the manga series. It premiered in Japan on April 26, 1989 and ran for 291 episodes until January 31, 1996.

In the original Japanese dub of the series, and in both the Japanese and English language mangas, Vegeta states that Goku’s level is actually “over 8000.” This can be seen in this scan from the manga.

On October 17th, 2006, 4Channer and Youtube user Kajetokun uploaded the video “9000!! NINE THOUSAAAAANDD!” Today, the video has over five million views.

Modern Usage

As early as 2007, the number 7 has been wordfiltered on 4chan to turn into “Over 9000.”

The phrase adopted from Dragon Ball Z is now used in place of saying “Like a million!” or “Tons!” when talking about a relatively large amount. Example dialogue:

Person one: How many people were at the dorm room party last night?
Person two: “Over NINE THOUSAAAAAAAND!”

Spread

The original “9000” video quickly drew attention from DBZ fans, and inspired remix videos right from the start. The meme quickly spread to YTMND within days.

On YTMND, there had already been a HAL9000 fad, centered around the computer from the famous Stanley Kubrick film 2001: A Space Odyssey. But on December 24th, 2006, YTMNDer CyrisMustang created “How much will the PS4 retail for?”

YTMND’s surrounding both HAL9000 and “Over 9000” were created through 2007, but by 2008 nearly all YTMND’s containing the number 9000 were in reference to the famous DBZ line.

Furthermore, overall Google searches for the obscure “Over 9000” DBZ reference also surpassed all searches for the wellknown “HAL9000” from Kubrick’s film.

Press

In April of 2008, Kajetokun was interviewed by Cybernetic Tigerz of Japanator.com. Here are some excerpts from the interview:

J: When you made the Dragon Ball cutup, did you have any idea it would go on to become such a huge phenomenon over the Internet? Or was it just something that you made for a small group of friends?

K:I had no idea it was going to get this big. Really it was just a small little something I made as an inside joke for my friends. My friend Patrick posted it on /b/ and then I ended up having like 20,000 views the next day. Then Scott from VGcats front page linked my video and I woke up to 200,000 views.

J: Now that you’ve created an immensely popular meme, do you feel like you understand how they work better? Looking from the inside out, could you identify an element that makes a meme successful with the general public? Or is it all completely random?

K:Honestly I never intended any of my videos to produce memes. They’re just movies that were made to be funny. I guess a successful meme is just something that’s funny.

J: Tell me now, is 4chan the organization behind the scenes that controls you, or is it something more sinister?

K:4Chan influences my type of humor and some of the things I watch, sure, but rarely did they ever influence what actual goes into the video (with the exception of over 9000 which originated from an obscure image on 4chan.) That usual comes about from screwing around with my friends and cracking jokes as we watch old shows.

Read the FULL INTERVIEW on Japanator.com

4Chan trolls Oprah

Over 9000 struck a chord with 4Chan early on, but in September of 2008, one particular Anonymous troll left a message on Oprah Winfrey’s message board, claiming to represent an organized network of pedophiles. Oprah took the bait, and read the post to her audience.

Considering the power and influence that Oprah has, this was viewed by many Anon’s as an “Epic Win.” Oprah had fallen for it, and was very disturbed.

The original video of Oprah’s message to her audience was quickly removed due to a copyright claim by Harpo, Inc.

Despite that fact, many “Oprah 9000” remix videos followed. These videos can be viewed on Youtube.

Domo

Domo-Kun (どーもくん Dōmo-kun) is the mascot of Japan’s NHK television station, appearing in several 30 second stop-motion sketches shown as station identification during shows.

Domo, the main character, is described as “a strange creature that hatched from an egg. Domo’s favorite food is Japanese-style meat and potato stew, and he has a strong dislike for apples, due to an unexplained mystery in his DNA. Domo can only communicate via producing a low-pitched noise which sounds somewhat like his own name, but other characters appear to understand him. Domo-kun is known to pass gas repeatedly when nervous or upset.”

Domo is often pasted in to relevant or major scenes of disaster as the apparent cause for destruction and retreat. A useage very similar to the more contemporary Disaster Girl.

Do a Barrel Roll!

On April 27, 1997 the entire N64 world did a collective barrel roll with the release of Star Fox 64. Whether it was the inane manner in which Peppy repeated the exact same sound byte throughout the game or the exhilaration of completing a 360 degree longitudinal rotation along a helical path, the phrase “Do A Barrel Roll!” still takes many of yesteryear’s gameplayers back to childhood for all it’s irreverence and mindless innocence (even when said gameplayers were your parents or even grandparents by now).

The original Barrel Roll YTMND eventually popped up in 2004, spawning the used and once abused Barrel Roll derivatives left for today’s nostalgic perusal.

Milhouse Is Not A Meme

Millhouse is not a meme, but “Millhouse is not a meme” is a meme. This usually plays out in a forum or comment section, somewhat to the same of effect of the famous “Who’s on first”, “Who’s on second” dialogue, but much less wittingly, like two children alternating indefinitely between “No I didn’t”, “Yes you did”.

For example:

Commenter: Millhouse is a meme.
Commenter: Millhouse is not a meme.
Commenter: Millhouse is not a meme, but “Millhouse is not meme” is a meme.

Hopefully at this point, someone will call a Combo Breaker to end the mindless de ja vu.
