Ah, read option in an already strong running game? That’s hard to defend in the NFL. With a bruiser running back and a scrambling QB, it’s got to be hard on other high school teams to defend that. Unless you’re playing against teams with equivalent talent in the defensive box, you’re probably not going to see many defensive ends that are disciplined enough to keep contain on the quarterback keeping the ball and running to the edge.

I “played” in high school myself, but I certainly didn’t start (I’ve never been bigger than 130 lbs.) Although in high school, I was able to break off the occasional play on offense or defense. Our offense was always your traditional running attack. My freshman year, we ran out of the I-Formation. We had a bigger tailback who could run between the tackles and a 4.4 guy who could take a toss sweep to the house on any play.

My sophomore and junior year, we ran the Wing-T (so every play was triple option.) Our quarterbacks weren’t very speedy nor could they throw, but they could always duck behind the linemen and get yards consistently. Our strength in later years were having big, meaty fullbacks, competent wingbacks, and our conditioning come 4th quarter.
